Sri Lanka & the Maldives: Temples, Tea Country & Overwater Villas

The drive north into the Cultural Triangle takes around three hours, broken by a stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple, a 160-meter rock complex housing hundreds of Buddhist statues and murals that have accumulated inside these caves for over two thousand years.

From there, the road continues to Sigiriya, where the fifth-century rock fortress rises almost vertically from the surrounding jungle, visible from a considerable distance before the climb itself even begins.

The ascent, broken into manageable stages past the fortress’s famous frescoes and mirror wall, rewards every step with the view from the summit, a sweep of unbroken forest stretching to the horizon in every direction.

Polonnaruwa served as Sri Lanka’s capital from the 11th to the 13th centuries, and its ruins remain some of the best preserved in the country.

The day moves through the site’s major landmarks: the Lankatilaka, Tivanka, and Thuparama image houses, among the largest and most striking on the island, and the domed stupas of Rankoth Vehera and Kiri Vehera.

At Gal Vihara, four Buddha statues carved directly into a single granite outcrop, two seated, one standing, one reclining, mark one of the more quietly astonishing sights in the Cultural Triangle.

The afternoon shifts entirely in register with a visit to Minneriya National Park, home to the largest wild elephant herds in Sri Lanka, along with regular leopard sightings and a wide range of resident birdlife.

The road to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s last royal capital, passes through increasingly hilly country before arriving at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

The Temple is said to house a tooth of the Buddha brought to the island in the 4th century and, according to local tradition, once smuggled past hostile forces hidden in the hair of an Orissan princess.

From there, the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya unfold across 147 acres, home to more than five thousand species of trees, plants, and orchids, with a dedicated Spice Garden worth its own detour.

A scenic train ride carries the journey into tea country, climbing steadily through mist and terraced hillsides toward Nuwara Eliya, nicknamed “Little England” for its cooler climate and colonial-era architecture.

The afternoon is spent at a working tea factory, where the process of withering, rolling, and firing Ceylon tea is explained firsthand, followed by a tasting of the estate’s own blends against a backdrop of some of the most photographed scenery in the country.

The drive south to Yala National Park takes most of the day, arriving in time for a late-afternoon safari before dinner.

Yala is Sri Lanka’s most visited national park, and for good reason: leopard density here is among the highest recorded anywhere in the world, alongside sizeable elephant herds, sloth bears, crocodiles, and more than 130 recorded bird species.

The first drive alone is usually enough to understand why this park has the reputation it does.

A full day is set aside for Yala itself, with both a dawn and dusk game drive taking in the park’s changing light and the different wildlife activity each brings.

Between drives, the lodge itself offers a chance to rest, with private pools and open-air dining giving the pace of the day a natural rhythm: safari, stillness, safari again.

The morning begins with a return drive to Colombo, timed to connect with an onward flight to Malé.

On arrival in the Maldives, a short seaplane or speedboat transfer, depending on the resort chosen, delivers you directly to the island itself, the transition from Yala’s dry, dust-colored plains to the Maldives’ turquoise shallows happening within the space of a single day.

The remainder of the afternoon is left entirely free to settle in.

Eight full days remain, with nothing scheduled beyond what you choose to fill them with.

Mornings might mean snorkelling directly off the villa’s own stretch of house reef, an early dive trip to a nearby channel known for manta rays, or simply breakfast served on a private deck with the lagoon a few steps away.

Afternoons tend to dissolve into the resort’s own rhythm, whether that means a spa treatment built around the day’s heat, a sunset cruise timed to catch the sky turning colour over open water, or nothing more ambitious than an overwater hammock and a book that goes largely unread.
