Register your marriage at a Bangkok district office, then mark it with a monks' blessing and a private dinner on the Chao Phraya.
Marriage Equality in Thailand

On January 23, 2025, Thailand’s Marriage Equality Act came into force, and the country became the first in Southeast Asia to recognise same-sex marriage. On that first day alone, more than 1,800 couples married across the country.
The law applies to visitors as well as Thai citizens. Couples can register at any district office, and in Bangkok there are 50 of them.
For many couples, that means a wedding that is both legally recognised and full of Thai tradition, in one of Asia’s most welcoming cities.
A Law Years in the Making
Thailand’s LGBTQ+ community campaigned for marriage equality for well over a decade, through court cases, petitions, and Pride marches. When the law passed, it gave same-sex spouses the same rights as any other married couple, including inheritance and the right to make medical decisions for each other.
Marrying here means joining that moment in history. Your guide can share how the campaign unfolded and what it has meant to Thai couples since.
The Legal Registration

Registration takes place at a district office with a registrar, two witnesses, and your documents. Visitors need their passports and a certificate showing that each partner is free to marry, usually arranged through your embassy in Thailand and then translated and certified.
The ceremony itself is short and simple, and the paperwork is the most involved part. With the right support, it can be completed within a short stay in the city.
A Thai Blessing

Many couples pair the registration with a traditional blessing. In a morning ceremony, Buddhist monks chant and offer blessings, and couples often make merit by offering food. Later, in the water-pouring ceremony, family and guests pour blessed water over the couple’s hands and wish them well.
Each element can be adapted to suit you, whether you would like something quiet and personal or a full celebration with friends.

Bangkok’s great river is the natural setting for a wedding dinner. Riverside hotels have terraces and ballrooms that look out over temples and boats, and a private dinner cruise lets you see the city lit up from the water.
For something more intimate, a small table on a quiet terrace at sunset can be just as memorable as a grand party.
Staying On

After the wedding, many couples stay on for a honeymoon. Within easy reach of Bangkok are the islands of the Andaman Sea, the beaches of the Gulf and the temples and mountains of Chiang Mai.
Thailand’s long tradition of welcoming LGBTQ+ travellers means you can expect a warm reception almost everywhere you go.
Planning Your Bangkok Wedding Experience
Preparing your documents takes time, so it is best to start several months before you travel and to check the requirements of your own embassy. Bangkok is pleasant from November to February, when the weather is cooler and drier. Allow a few days in the city for registration and celebration.
Out Of Office can coordinate the legal paperwork and translations, arrange a Thai blessing, and plan a dinner or celebration on the river as part of our weddings abroad. Your LGBTQ+ travel specialist can also design a honeymoon in Thailand to follow, wherever in the country you would like to go.
