A Sunset Horse Ride on Luskentyre Beach, Isle of Harris

Ride across the white sands and turquoise shallows of Luskentyre as the Hebridean sun sinks into the Atlantic, in a small guided group.

Along the Water’s Edge

Horse hoofprints on wet sand at Luskentyre

Luskentyre sits on the west coast of Harris, facing an Atlantic that runs unbroken to the horizon. You set off along the shore, hooves pressing fleeting prints into wet sand, the wind carrying salt and seaweed, anticipation rising as the sun drops and washes the bay gold and rose.

Far from busy bridleways or crowded beaches, the ride follows the Hebridean coast; a wonderful experience for a couple, friends or a family of confident riders.

Crofting, Horses and a Timeless Beach

White sands and turquoise water of Luskentyre with hills behind

Sturdy island horses have long been part of Hebridean life, used on the crofts and for getting about, and they remain part of the islands’ heritage. Luskentyre is famous for its scenery: vast white sands, turquoise shallows and views to the surrounding hills. It once supported small fishing and crofting communities who used the beach and tidal flats for grazing and travel, and its remoteness has kept it largely untouched and timeless. Most visitors see it from a coach or on a quick drive, which rarely allows any real connection with the land or the horses.

Why a Small Group

Guide leading a small group of riders past the dunes

Riding in a small group, or privately, lets you truly sink into Luskentyre. The pace follows conditions, walk, trot or canter, with time to stop at rock pools or dunes to watch wildlife or photograph the sunset, and your guide shares what bigger tours lose, from local plants and geology to the story of crofting.

Gold, Coral and Purple

Wet sand mirroring a coral sunset sky at Luskentyre

You saddle up on a grassy verge, and the first view of the sands opens wide. Wet sand shines like a mirror and ripples in the tidal pools catch the last light, the Atlantic stretching west to the horizon with small islands rising offshore, their outlines softened by the evening. The horses pick their way through shallow streams and over firm sand as shadows lengthen and the sky shifts from gold to deep coral and purple, lighting the bay in fleeting, changing colour.

Prints the Tide Will Take

Horses silhouetted on the shoreline at dusk on Harris

By the end, the tide is already erasing your tracks, but the colour, light and movement stay with you, the solitude, the horses and the sunset turning a beautiful beach into something deeply personal. Your Out Of Office LGBTQ+ travel specialist can build the ride into a Hebridean island trip, and our United Kingdom guide covers LGBTQ+ rights and travel advice.
