The Dambulla Cave Temples with a Private Guide, Sri Lanka

Climb to five painted cave shrines above the plain, where centuries of kings added murals and more than 150 Buddha statues.

From Monks’ Shelter to Royal Shrine

In the third century BCE, Buddhist monks began sheltering in Dambulla’s caves, meditating beneath the rock overhangs high above the plain. Centuries afterward, the exiled King Valagamba took refuge in them for fourteen years after being driven from Anuradhapura, and when he won back his throne he turned the caves into shrines to thank the monks who had protected him. With your private guide you move through the five principal cave temples, their walls alive with centuries-old paintings and more than 150 Buddha figures shaped from the rock.

Murals Across the Rock

Together the caves hold some 2,100 square metres of painted rock, covering walls and ceilings 160 metres up the cliff, among the most extensive expanses of ancient painting to have come down to us anywhere. The paintings tell the life of Gautama Buddha, including the moment Mara the tempter tried to sway him and the day he first preached, along with Jataka stories and portraits of historic kings. In Cave 3 a ceiling shows Maitreya, the Buddha still to come, teaching from a classical pavilion; Cave 4 has a great mural of the Buddha seated among his disciples in an assembly hall; while in Cave 5 you find protective gods of the region, Vishnu and Kataragama among them.

No two trips we plan are the same. Yours will be no exception.

Statues Gilded by Kings

Row of seated and reclining Buddha statues inside a cave shrine

Seated, standing and reclining, more than 150 Buddhas fill the caves, added and gilded over the centuries by one ruler after another. Nissanka Malla, king in the 1100s, covered areas of the interior in gold and contributed some 70 figures, while the Kandyan monarchs of the 1700s repaired and repainted a great deal, giving it the layered look you see now. At the foot of the rock stands something quite separate: the 30-metre Golden Buddha, completed in 2001, its hands lifted in the Vitarka Mudra, the sign of teaching, as it sits in the Dhamma Chakka pose, a modern landmark often confused with the ancient caves above.

Why a Private Guide

Private guide pointing out mural details to a visitor in the caves

Without context, much of the detail slips past: the restorations of different eras, the particular story behind each mural, the order in which the shrines were made. A private guide draws it all out and lets you absorb the full sweep of the murals instead of shuffling through with a crowd, setting the pace of the climb to suit you and timing the visit around the rest of your day. Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is the norm at Sri Lanka’s temples, and your guide will advise.

Your Out Of Office LGBTQ+ travel specialist plans the visit within your wider route, and our Sri Lanka guide covers LGBTQ+ rights and travel advice.
