Sunrise at Angkor Wat, Then the Temples Beyond

Watch Angkor Wat's towers emerge from the dark over its reflecting ponds, then slip ahead of the crowds to the temples around it.

Five Towers Against a Changing Sky

Angkor Wat's towers reflected in a pond at dawn

In the minutes before sunrise, the sky over Angkor Wat turns from deep blue to gold, and the temple’s five towers emerge from the darkness over the treetops, lit from behind. On still mornings the reflecting ponds mirror the whole scene, the view behind countless postcards. In the cooler months, mist often lingers low over the grounds, lifting as the sun climbs to reveal the causeway and the outer galleries.

The Quiet Before the Light

Before dawn the grounds are quiet. Most visitors cluster by the ponds, while the wider complex stays dark and still, with only birds and insects calling from the forest. A few stallholders lay out their wares along the causeway, yet the temple remains calm until daylight arrives.

As the sun rises, the carved galleries and courtyards appear one by one, moving from outline to full detail over about half an hour. Once the sun is fully up, the ponds are calm enough to photograph the reflection without a ripple. Remember that modest dress is expected throughout the grounds, with shoulders and knees covered, even at this early hour.

Ahead of Everyone Else

Tree roots entwined with the ruins of Ta Prohm

In Siem Reap, few things depend on timing like this: the prime spots at the ponds are claimed early, and arriving slightly late or early alters what you see. A private guide and driver take the guesswork out of it, with your morning planned around the light.

Better still, once the sun is up and the crowds arrive at Angkor Wat, you can head on to the Bayon or Ta Prohm while everyone else lingers by the water, turning one sunrise into a whole morning among the temples, well before the midday queues.

Worth the Early Start

The reflecting ponds offer a picture you won’t see later in the day, and around the March and September equinoxes the sun rises in alignment with the temple, something few visitors ever catch.

It’s a memorable morning for couples, friends and solo travellers alike, and your Out Of Office specialist can pair it with welcoming hotels in Siem Reap. Our Cambodia guide covers LGBTQ+ rights and practical advice before you go.
