Enter a Fijian village the customary way, presenting kava to the chief and sharing the bowl, at an unhurried pace.
Arriving as a Guest

In Fiji, you don’t simply walk into a village. The customary way in is sevusevu: before anything else happens, visitors present kava root to the chief. Done privately, the ceremony moves at its own pace and ends in a shared bowl of kava, conversation and often a meal, a real welcome rather than a stop on a schedule.
You reach the village by a short boat ride from your resort. In the vale ni bose, the village meeting house, the chief or a chosen spokesperson receives you on woven mats, and your gift of waka, bundles of dried kava root, is offered first.
The Kava Bowl

Once accepted, the root is pounded and stirred with water in a broad wooden tanoa, then ladled into a bilo, a cup made from a coconut shell, which travels from guest to guest. One clap before you drink, drink it all, then three claps; the rhythm soon feels natural.
Conversation follows, frequently around a meal, and many visits go on to a stroll through the village or a chance to watch weaving or cooking done the traditional way.

Modest dress is expected throughout, with shoulders and knees covered, and hats come off before you enter the village. With no tour group waiting outside, the ceremony keeps its own unhurried rhythm, closer to the way a visiting relative might be received than to a scheduled excursion.
Where and How It’s Arranged

Depending on where your trip is based, the village may be close to the Mamanuca or Yasawa Islands, or near Savusavu on Vanua Levu. Out Of Office arranges the sevusevu directly with the village’s leaders, not through a resort excursion desk, and fits it into your day: after a morning on the water, perhaps, or before moving on to the next island.

A Reef That Runs on the Tide Rainbow Reef lies in the Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu and is known for some of the most celebrated soft coral diving anywhere. Its signature site, the Great White Wall, falls away from about fifteen metres into a sheer face covered in white soft coral that, when the light is right, seems lit from inside.

Savusavu’s Hot Springs with a Private Guide, Vanua Levu, Fiji
Hot Springs in the Middle of Town Savusavu, on the southern coast of Vanua Levu, Fiji's second-largest island, is a short domestic flight from Nadi or Suva. Its volcanic hot springs are not a spa. Small pools and steaming vents lie close to the town centre, some loosely fenced off, others simply part of the ground between houses and gardens, and residents and market traders walk past them on everyday errands.
