Based in Acre, Israel’s ancient port city, The Efendi blends in seamlessly with the warren of stone alleys, markets, and heritage sites that surround it. The hotel is reminiscent of a 19th-century sultan’s place, and upon arriving, guests will find themselves embraced by an unbelievably attentive and welcoming team of world-class staff.
Whilst conjuring an atmosphere of impossible grandeur, The Efendi is actually a small boutique property, with just 12 high-ceilinged rooms and suites. Every space a the hotel has been individually and lovingly designed to reflect an aesthetic ethos defined by a fusion of contemporary and traditional Israeli elements. On The Efendi’s ground floor, guests will find a small spa and treatment room, complete with a 400-year-old marble hammam. In addition to a wine cellar and basement wine bar, the hotel also boasts a sister restaurant in the form of Uri Buri – a delectable seafood-focused establishment.

Israel is a unique case in the Middle East, balancing strong religious influences with a progressive approach to LGBTQ+ rights. LGBTQ+ individuals can live openly and freely, particularly in urban centers like Tel Aviv, often regarded as one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cities in the world. While same-sex marriage is not legally performed in Israel, the country recognizes civil unions and validates same-sex marriages conducted abroad, granting LGBTQ+ couples many of the same rights as heterosexual married couples.
Israel has been a regional pioneer in LGBTQ+ rights, formally repealing anti-homosexuality laws inherited from British rule in 1988. The country provides legal protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation in areas like employment and public services, and LGBTQ+ individuals are allowed to serve openly in the military. Adoption by same-sex couples is permitted, reflecting further legal inclusivity.
Tel Aviv is the epicenter of LGBTQ+ life in Israel, hosting the annual Tel Aviv Pride Parade, one of the largest Pride events in the world. The city’s vibrant nightlife, inclusive culture, and welcoming atmosphere attract visitors from across the globe. Outside Tel Aviv, attitudes may be more conservative, particularly in religious and rural communities, but LGBTQ+ individuals generally experience a high degree of safety and freedom compared to other countries in the region.
Israel’s progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights, coupled with its cultural and historical significance, makes it a compelling destination for LGBTQ+ travelers seeking a mix of openness, heritage, and community.
