Japan Gay Honeymoons
For LGBTQ+ couples travelling in Japan, an additional layer of care is needed: knowing which neighbourhoods feel most welcoming, which hotels treat same-sex couples with real warmth, and how norms around public affection shift from city to city.
Shinjuku’s Ni-chome district in Tokyo boasts one of the highest concentrations of gay bars anywhere in the world, yet the etiquette inside those bars, and outside them, differs enough from home that it is worth knowing before arrival.
Traditional public baths add another layer entirely: most onsen remain segregated by sex rather than by couple, and a private kashikiri bath, booked in advance, is usually the better route for a honeymoon than a communal one. That local knowledge matters more in Japan than in most honeymoon destinations, since the difference between a good hotel and the right hotel rarely shows up in a review.
Same-sex marriage is not yet legal in Japan at a national level, though several major cities, including Tokyo and Osaka, have introduced partnership certificates, and the social climate in urban areas is open and progressive.
We have been arranging luxury LGBTQ+ travel since 2015, and in that time we have built the kind of relationships that cannot be replicated by booking direct: we know which hotels to recommend in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district and which ryokans in Kyoto welcome same-sex couples without question, along with the experiences that never make it onto a standard itinerary, like a private tea ceremony after hours, a Gion district walk timed around the geiko and maiko’s evening appointments, and a table at a counter-seat sushi restaurant that otherwise only takes reservations from regulars.
We handle the planning, the connections, and the details. You arrive knowing exactly what to expect, down to the smallest moments that usually go unplanned.
Best Gay Honeymoons in Japan
Planning A Gay Honeymoon In Japan
The meal you remember from Japan isn’t always the Michelin-starred one. It’s the counter seat in Osaka where the chef served nothing but beef or the ryokan breakfast that arrived course by course while rain fell outside. Japan rewards attention and repays it in ways that are hard to anticipate before you’ve been.
Japan’s hospitality culture, omotenashi, is built around anticipating needs rather than responding to them. At the right properties, preferences noted on arrival are acted on throughout the stay. For couples, that quality of attentiveness is the whole point.
Tokyo has the most visible LGBTQ+ scene in Asia. Shinjuku Ni-chome contains more gay bars per square meter than anywhere else in Japan, and the city’s annual Pride parade draws hundreds of thousands of participants. Kyoto operates at a quieter register, with a well-established LGBTQ+ presence around Gion and Kawaramachi. Osaka sits between the two: less formal than Kyoto and less frenetic than Tokyo, with a food culture locals will tell you is the best in Japan.
Out Of Office builds Japan honeymoons around what couples actually want. That might mean combining Tokyo with a week on the Nakasendo trail, ending at a remote onsen ryokan in the Japanese Alps. Or a focused Kyoto stay with private temple access and a night at Aman Kyoto. We know which hotels welcome same-sex couples without question, which experiences require booking months in advance, and which details quietly make the difference.
Omotenashi means service that reads what you need before you ask.
2Neon in Tokyo, temple gardens in Kyoto, same day.
3Private onsen and ryokan stays, built for two.
4Tokyo and Osaka offer partnership certificates, ahead of national law.

First Time in Japan: What to Know Before You Go
Japan operates differently than anywhere else you've travelled. The logistics that make other destinations manageable fall apart here. Restaurant reservations require Japanese phone numbers. Ryokans enforce strict check-in windows with no flexibility. Train station announcements default to Japanese, with English translations that come too late or not at all (the train will be on time, though!). The country rewards preparation and punishes improvisation, which makes first-time independent travel a high-stakes gamble most people lose.

Cherry Blossom Season in Japan: A Gay Travel Guide
Cherry blossom season is one of the busiest and most exciting times to visit Japan. Each spring, the bloom moves north through the country, usually reaching Tokyo and Kyoto from late March into early April before appearing later in northern regions such as Aomori. Exact dates change every year, sometimes significantly, which is why planning around the forecast matters.
ReadThings To Do In Japan
Japan’s food culture alone justifies the trip. Tokyo has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city on earth, but the more interesting meals are often found elsewhere: a twelve-seat counter in Osaka serving nothing but beef, a generations-old soba maker in a Kyoto side street, a breakfast of fresh fish and pickled vegetables at a ryokan in the mountains. A private food tour with a guide who has spent years building these relationships is a different experience to walking into whatever has an English menu.
Cultural highlights are equally layered. Kabuki theater, performed at Tokyo’s Kabukiza theater, is a form that has been developing for four centuries and rewards even visitors who arrive without context.
The sumo tournaments in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya run for fifteen days each and can be attended with ringside seats arranged in advance. Temple and shrine visits are better early: Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, with its thousands of torii gates climbing the hillside, is atmospheric at 6am and crowded by 9.
For couples wanting to slow down, the onsen ryokan experience is central to any Japan honeymoon worth the name. The best properties, places like Beniya Mukayu in Kaga Onsen or Hoshinoya Kyoto, accessible only by boat up the Oi River, combine architecture, food, spa, and service in a way that’s hard to find anywhere else in the world.

3Take in Mount Fuji from a lakeside ryokan or scenic viewpoint

The Most Luxurious Ryokans in Japan
Japan’s ryokans—traditional Japanese inns—are a quintessential way to immerse yourself in Japanese culture. Ryokans are found across Japan, often in scenic locations such as hot spring (onsen) towns, mountainous regions, and coastal areas. They continue to uphold traditional Japanese hospitality, offering guests a unique cultural experience that sets them apart from modern hotels. Key features of ryokans include tatami-mat flooring, futon bedding, yukata robes, and multi-course kaiseki dining that highlights local, seasonal ingredients.
ReadWhy Book Your Japan Honeymoon With Out Of Office
Japan is one of the most rewarding destinations in the world to visit and one of the more complex to plan well. The language barrier is real, the booking systems for the best ryokans and restaurants are not designed for international travelers, and knowing where LGBTQ+ couples will feel genuinely at ease, rather than just tolerated, requires experience on the ground.
Out Of Office has been arranging luxury LGBTQ+ travel for over a decade. We have visited the properties we recommend, we know the guides we work with, and we have the relationships that make certain reservations possible. When something changes mid-trip, which in Japan might mean a typhoon, a festival closing a road, or a restaurant suddenly unavailable, you have a concierge team on hand to reroute without fuss.
Every itinerary we build is tailor-made. There is no Japan honeymoon package, because no two couples want the same trip. What we offer is the expertise to ask the right questions and the connections to deliver the answers.
Tell us where your mind keeps going back to. We will do the rest.

Ten Years of Out Of Office: How We’re Redefining LGBTQ+ Travel
Ten years ago, I was sitting around a table with a group of friends, trying to come up with a name for a luxury, LGBTQ+ travel company. The list was long and mostly rainbow-themed. But at the last minute, just as we were about to give up, someone suggested yet another name: Out Of Office. That was the moment it clicked. Out Of Office perfectly captured the shift from everyday routine to something freer.

Asia is packed with luxury travel opportunities, but beyond the well-known hotspots lies a world of exclusive, offbeat experiences. From soaring above Bhutan’s mystical valleys by helicopter to soaking in private onsen baths at hidden ryokans in Japan. ReadBest Time For A Gay Honeymoon In Japan
Spring, from late March through April, is Japan’s most sought-after honeymoon season, timed around cherry blossoms in Tokyo and Kyoto, with mild temperatures in the 60s. Autumn, from late October through November, offers an equally striking alternative with fall foliage through Kyoto’s temples and gardens and considerably fewer crowds than cherry blossom season.
Summer, from June through August, brings high humidity and a rainy season in June, making it the least comfortable stretch for city sightseeing, though it is a good time for a Hokkaido or mountain-focused extension. Winter suits couples building a honeymoon around onsen hot springs and, in Hokkaido, skiing, with Kyoto and Tokyo both comfortable for shorter city stays.
The best trips begin with a conversation, not a booking form.
Start planning your honeymoonStart planning→Best Places To Combine For A Japanese Honeymoon
Tokyo and Kyoto form the essential pairing for a beautifully crafted Japan honeymoon, connected by a roughly two-and-a-half-hour bullet train, and cover the full contrast between ultramodern city life and traditional temples and gardens. Osaka is an easy add-on from Kyoto for food-focused couples.
Hakone is the most popular short extension from Tokyo, adding a night or two at a ryokan with private onsen baths and views of Mount Fuji. Couples with ten days or more often close the trip with a few days in Okinawa for beach time, a very different register from the rest of the honeymoon.
Shanghai is under three hours from Tokyo or Osaka and works well as a short, contrasting add-on, particularly for couples who want a second country’s food and city energy without a long-haul flight to reach it.
No two trips we plan are the same. Yours will be no exception.
Start planning your honeymoonStart planning→FAQs
Is Japan legal and welcoming for a gay honeymoon?
Japan does not have national marriage equality, though a growing number of municipalities, including Tokyo, issue partnership certificates that are recognized locally for things like hospital visitation and hotel bookings. Japan is generally very safe and courteous toward LGBTQ+ visitors, though public displays of affection are uncommon culturally for any couple, gay or straight.
How many days should we plan for a Japan honeymoon?
Ten to twelve days covers Tokyo, Kyoto, and one additional stop such as Hakone or Osaka comfortably. A shorter trip of seven days works well focused on just Tokyo and Kyoto.
Which city is better for a honeymoon, Tokyo or Kyoto?
Tokyo suits couples who want nightlife, shopping, and a modern energy, including Shinjuku’s Ni-chome gay district, while Kyoto offers a slower, more traditional pace built around temples, gardens, and ryokan stays. Most honeymoons combine both.

Best Luxury Hotels in Japan for Gay Travellers
Tailor-made HolidayJapan has one of the most distinctive luxury hotel scenes in the world because the best properties rarely feel interchangeable. In Tokyo, hotels such as Aman and The Peninsula use height as part of the experience, with rooms looking across an enormous city below. Aman Tokyo, for example, uses shoji-style screens, washi paper and ryokan-inspired proportions to make the hotel feel unmistakably Japanese rather than like an international five-star that could be anywhere.
