Spend time with Sámi hosts among their reindeer, sharing stories by the fire in a lavvu and learning how the herding year still shapes life.
Welcomed by Sámi Hosts

In Swedish Lapland, Sámi communities have lived and worked across the Arctic for thousands of years, in a land of forest, mountain, river and open tundra that still shapes everyday life. Your Sámi hosts welcome you with stories, customs and knowledge handed down through the generations, so rather than watching from afar you learn directly from people who live and work here. Much of the day centres on reindeer, still deeply bound up with Sámi culture, identity and livelihood.
Far More Than Reindeer

The Sámi are the Indigenous people of northern Scandinavia, living across today’s Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia’s Kola Peninsula, with a history reaching back thousands of years before any modern border. Over the centuries they adapted to the far north through hunting, fishing, trade and reindeer husbandry, and herding families still follow seasonal migrations kept alive across generations.
The Sámi have their own languages, art, crafts and oral traditions, and storytelling remains a vital way of passing on knowledge and keeping ties to the land and to identity. Visitors often think of Sámi culture only in terms of reindeer, but it is much broader, and this visit shows how history, land use, family tradition and modern life continue to meet across Lapland.
The best trips begin with a conversation, not a booking form.

Many people meet Sámi culture through museums, shows or short demonstrations, good introductions that rarely allow for real discussion. Privately or in a small group, there’s space to talk: to ask questions, go deeper and gain a personal understanding of Sámi life today, with the time shaped by what interests both you and your hosts. It’s a thoughtful, memorable day for a couple, friends or a solo traveller.
Around the Fire in the Lavvu

The visit usually begins at a Sámi camp, family property or gathering place set in the Lapland landscape, reindeer grazing nearby as your hosts explain their place in Sámi life. You may help feed them, learn how herds are managed through the year and hear about the seasonal moves that set the herding calendar, with conversation ranging from migration routes and weather to family traditions and the challenges Sámi communities face today. Traditional clothing, tools and crafts are often part of it, and you may gather around a fire or inside a lavvu, a traditional Sámi tent, where stories and knowledge are shared as they have been for generations.
The focus is always on people and culture, not performance: a window into a living community and its bond with the land. Your Out Of Office LGBTQ+ travel specialist can arrange the visit within a Lapland stay, and our Sweden guide covers LGBTQ+ rights and travel advice.

Most visitors only see a sliver of it, but a private yacht takes you to parts barely touched by tourism.
