Snorkelling with Wild Sea Turtles in St Barths

Slip into the reserve's quietest bays at the calmest hour with a turtle-savvy guide, and drift beside green and hawksbill turtles as they feed.

Turtles in the Wild

Thanks to its natural reserve, St Barths’ waters hold a healthy, easily reached population of wild sea turtles. Few Caribbean islands offer such dependable encounters with free-roaming turtles in their natural habitat.

Since 1996, the reserve has protected 1,200 hectares of sea across five coastal sectors, and within them green and hawksbill turtles roam freely over seagrass, coral, and shallow bays; in the eastern lagoon of Grand Cul de Sac alone, roughly 70 have been identified. They’re wild and free to come and go, so a good sighting depends on where and when you go and a guide who reads both well.

A Reserve That Brought Them Back

It was set up as the island’s marine life came under increasing strain, a deliberate line drawn around its most important waters, and a dedicated team monitors wildlife, enforces the rules, and keeps it among the clearest, most biodiverse stretches of the Caribbean.

Hundreds of years of hunting and lost habitat devastated turtles across the region, and the ones you’ll see here owe their numbers directly to that protection, which is what makes meeting them in the wild so different from staged encounters elsewhere.

The water stays around 26°C all year, with 20 to 30 metres of visibility on calm days. December to June is best, with lighter winds and steadier turtle activity in the shallows; from July to November conditions vary more, though you can still see turtles.

Why Timing and a Guide Matter

Guide showing guests how to enter the water quietly near turtles

The most popular spots get busy in high season, and the gap between a good sighting and an unforgettable one depends on when you arrive, where you position yourself and how quietly you swim.

Your own boat lets you choose both around the conditions, so you’re at Colombier or the eastern lagoon when the water is at its most still, before or after the busiest hours.

A guide who truly understands turtle behaviour knows where in a bay they’re likely to be at a given hour and how to slip in without startling them; drifting quietly beside a feeding green turtle rather than watching it swim off from a crowd is all in the approach.

With nobody else to follow, it’s a gentle, magical outing for a couple, friends, or a family.

Colombier, Grand Cul-de-Sac, and Île Fourchue

Anse de Colombier's quiet beach reached only by boat or trail

Anse de Colombier, at the island’s northwest tip, is the most famous of the three, accessible solely by sea or by a short walk over from Flamands, which keeps it quieter than easier beaches. Its seagrass draws green turtles to feed, and the rocks around it shelter stingrays, lobsters, octopuses, and barracuda; arriving by boat early, before walkers come over the hill, makes it especially still.

On the east coast, Grand Cul de Sac is the densest turtle site; its calm, shallow, seagrass-rich lagoon is ideal for long watching, and the turtles move with visible ease in its protected water.

Île Fourchue, an empty islet some eight kilometres from Gustavia, lies furthest out and is often the most personal, with regular hawksbills, sea fans, parrotfish, and now and then a reef shark keeping its distance.

Out Of Office works with a few local operators who know the reserve intimately and follow its conservation principles, timing your trip around the conditions and arranging the boat, equipment, and logistics in advance. Your LGBTQ+ travel specialist can pair it with a welcoming place to stay on the island.
