MONA After Hours: A Private Night Inside Hobart’s Underground Museum

The museum that sets out to unsettle, explored after closing with a MONA curator and only your own party for company.

Three Floors Below the Sandstone

MONA is carved into a sandstone cliff on the Moorilla peninsula, just outside Hobart, and it goes down rather than up: three levels below ground, no natural light, and no set route through the galleries. By day it shares that intentionally disorienting space with thousands of visitors. Once the doors close, it’s yours.

Nothing about the art changes after hours. Wim Delvoye, Sidney Nolan and Julius Popp are all exactly where they were at lunchtime. What changes is how you meet them. Without the crowd and the chatter, the scale of a piece and the way the rooms speak to each other become far easier to read, and the works that ask for patience finally get it.

A Collection That Refuses to Play Safe

MONA is the private collection of David Walsh, a professional gambler who put his winnings into a museum meant to confront the people who visit it. Walsh has said he uses art to explore sex and death, not to shock for its own sake, but to open up the subjects most institutions steer around. Alongside Ai Weiwei, Sidney Nolan and Julius Popp you’ll find pieces that have sparked censorship debates and public rows in equal measure.

There’s no wall text by default. You navigate with the museum’s own app, and works sit together by association rather than by date or theme. It’s a place built for time and attention, which is exactly what an ordinary visit, fitted around ferry times and visitor numbers, rarely allows.

Seeing It Through a Curator’s Eyes

Your evening is led by a guide from MONA’s own staff, usually a senior resident curator. They know why each piece was bought, why it sits where it does, and what Walsh argued for when he commissioned or chose it. They also know how works have been moved, reframed or challenged over the years. In a museum where the relationship between objects is as deliberate as the objects themselves, that knowledge changes what you’re looking at.

Some works only give themselves up slowly. Julius Popp’s bit.fall spells words in falling drops of water that form and vanish. James Turrell’s Unseen Seen surrounds you in undifferentiated light and needs several minutes before its full effect arrives. With no queue and no noise, you can give each one the time it deserves, and ask everything you want to.

Drinks in the Hidden Vault

The night ends somewhere most visitors never see: a vault-like room tucked away from the main routes on the museum’s lower levels, cut into the same sandstone as the galleries around it. Drinks are served there with no fixed programme, so the conversation can wander wherever the evening has taken you.

It’s a fitting close. The space isn’t a reception room bolted onto the tour. You stay inside the museum’s world rather than stepping back out of it, and like much of MONA, the evening doesn’t tie itself up neatly.
