The Rock at the Heart of Australia
Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, rises alone from the desert of the Northern Territory’s Red Centre: 348 meters high and 9.4 kilometers around.
This vast sandstone monolith is the product of millions of years of uplift and erosion, and the iron oxide on its surface gives it the colour it’s famous for.
Light changes it all day, from fiery red at sunrise and sunset to softer tones in between.

Anangu Country
Uluru is the ancestral home of the Anangu, the traditional owners of the land, whose people have lived in the Western Desert for more than 60,000 years. To them it’s a living presence, held within Tjukurpa: the law, beliefs, and creation stories that shape how the land is understood and cared for. Its caves, waterholes, and rock art carry those stories, and some knowledge belongs only to certain people and isn’t shared.
Out of respect for its significance, climbing Uluru was officially closed in 2019. Guided walks with Anangu guides, storytelling, and the park’s cultural centre are the best ways to understand it.
On Foot Around the Rock
The 10.6-kilometer base walk circles the rock, passing its caves, formations, and cultural sites. Fifty kilometers west, the Valley of the Winds walk winds through Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), a cluster of 36 domed rocks that also holds deep cultural meaning.
Visitors are asked to stay on marked paths and follow the guidance of the Anangu and the national park.

For a morning you’ll never forget, sunrise flights leave Ayers Rock Airport between about 4:30 and 5am, near Yulara, the resort township around 20 kilometers from the rock.
From above, Uluru’s scale finally makes sense, and the flight usually takes in Kata Tjuta too. As the light grows, the rock moves from silhouette to deep ochre and burnt red, with just the two of you in the cabin.
Breakfast for Two on an Empty Dune
The helicopter lands on a remote red dune with no roads and no one else around, where a white-linen table faces Uluru. A private chef, cooking without a kitchen, serves breakfast with vintage champagne as the rock brightens in distinct stages, a shift of around 20 to 30 minutes.
It’s a honeymoon-worthy morning.
May to September brings the most comfortable conditions; summer often passes 40°C. The flight and the breakfast are arranged with permitted operators and follow Anangu protocols on flight paths and landings.
