Moment · Mauritius

Sunrise at Le Morne Brabant, Mauritius, from Beach or Summit

Watch dawn light climb the UNESCO-listed mountain that sheltered escaped slaves, from the quiet lagoon shore or its hard-won summit.

Before the Island Wakes

At 6 am the southwest tip of Mauritius is silent: the water off Le Morne Beach is glassy and colorless, the pirogues motionless, and the mountain overhead hasn’t yet caught the light. Then, quickly, the sky behind the great rock turns amber and then flame, its summit begins to shine, and the dark shape that stood against the night becomes something else entirely. Few starts to a Mauritian day are so slow, or so affecting, and a quiet, shared hour for a couple.

A Mountain of Refuge

UNESCO inscribed Le Morne Brabant for far more than its looks. In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries runaway slaves known as Maroons hid in its caves and on its sheer faces, having escaped the plantations to this isolated corner of the island, and it became an emblem of defiance Mauritius has never forgotten.

Its most haunting story has become part of the nation’s identity. In 1835, the legend goes, a group of escaped slaves saw soldiers approaching and, believing they would be recaptured, threw themselves from the heights rather than be taken, unaware the troops were bringing word that slavery was over. A memorial close to the shore remembers them, and standing close to it as the light rises over the lagoon gives the morning a weight far beyond the view.

The View from the Shore

The public beach is the easiest place to watch from, and one of the best. The mountain rises to the west while the sun comes up in the east, so the water catches the light before it creeps up the mountain. The Slave Route Monument makes an unusually fine foreground for photographs, and dawn’s soft side-light brings out the contrast between volcanic stone and turquoise water as midday never does.

For something quieter, the peninsula’s northern side is less visited: dawn reaches Chamarel’s hills over the bay first, and you’ll have left the main beach’s onlookers behind, the right choice if you want the view without the climb.

No two trips we plan are the same. Yours will be no exception.

Climbing to the Summit for Sunrise

Hikers with headlamps on the rocky upper trail of Le Morne Brabant

For the full 360-degree panorama, the guided sunrise hike sets off as early as 4 am to reach the top before first light. Near the summit there are technical scrambling sections, so a professional guide is strongly advised rather than optional. The round trip takes about three hours, and the reward, the whole southwestern coast spread below you in early light, matches the effort. Pack a head torch, sturdy hiking shoes and a litre or more of water; anyone reasonably fit can manage it, as long as the airy final sections are tackled carefully with your guide.

Planning Your Morning

Beachfront hotel on Mauritius's southwest coast at first light

In early May the sun rises around 6:26 am, and around 6:37 as the month ends, so reaching the beach by 6 is enough to see it all without a punishing start. Summit guides usually leave the base around 4 am. Several of the southwest coast’s best hotels, including the Outrigger, Le Méridien and the Oberoi, are close enough to arrange early transfers or packed breakfasts while other guests are still asleep. Your Out Of Office LGBTQ+ travel specialist can pair the morning with a welcoming resort, and our Mauritius guide covers LGBTQ+ rights and travel advice.
