Soak in warm water above glacial Lake Tekapo as the Southern Alps darken and the stars of a Dark Sky Reserve appear overhead.
High Country Light

Lake Tekapo lies high in New Zealand’s South Island, where the land opens out and the sky feels close enough to touch. The lake’s pale glacial blue changes constantly with the light, framed by golden-brown grassland and distant peaks. You arrive as the sun drops, the air cooling quickly and the mountains deepening in colour, with steam drifting from the pools and no reason at all to hurry. Sunset is Tekapo’s finest hour, when the low orange light turns the hillsides to gold.
A Basin Under Protected Skies

Tekapo sits in the Mackenzie Basin, an immense landscape carved by glaciers and braided rivers beneath some of the clearest skies on earth. Few people live here, and it’s valued as much for what’s missing as for what’s untouched. In cold, mountainous places, warm water has long been used for rest and recovery, especially where hard work and exposure were part of life.
Tekapo is also an internationally recognised Dark Sky Reserve, one of the world’s great stargazing spots, protected from light pollution to keep the night sky clear. Visiting the pools at dusk puts you right inside that rhythm, as the sky turns from soft colour to deep blue and finally to stars.

Most people use the pools in larger groups, where noise, movement and chatter can break the calm. With a small group, the pools feel intimate and private, everyone moves at their own pace, voices stay low and attention turns to the landscape instead of the crowd. There’s no rush and no jostling for the view, so a simple soak becomes a restorative ritual, lovely for a couple or a few close friends.
From Gold to Starlight

The pools sit slightly above the lake, looking out across the whole basin, and from the water the land feels vast and still, the mountains quiet on the horizon, their outlines sharpening as the sun goes. Steam rises and the water mirrors the sky, first pale gold, then soft pink, then grey-blue, and as evening deepens the first stars appear, faint at first and then ever clearer. Your Out Of Office LGBTQ+ travel specialist can pair the evening with a welcoming lodge and stargazing in the reserve.
