French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity, so the local language is French and the currency is the CFP Franc, though US dollars are widely accepted at the resorts.
Most international visitors arrive on Tahiti and connect to Bora Bora by a 50-minute domestic flight with Air Tahiti. From the resorts, transfers from the airport are typically by boat across the lagoon, which most guests find is the moment the trip starts to feel real.UK and US citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days.
The time difference is GMT-10, which means Bora Bora is one of the slowest places to adjust to and one of the slowest to come back from.

The Lagoon
You'll spend most of your trip on or in it, and you should. Take a private boat tour, snorkel with rays and reef sharks at the lagoonarium, or spend an afternoon on a motu picnic at one of the sandbar islands.
Mount Otemanu from the Air
The volcanic peak in the middle of the island is the shot every photographer comes for, and a helicopter or seaplane tour is the way to see it properly. Twenty minutes in the air over the lagoon and Otemanu is the single most spectacular thing you'll do here, and the view nobody who only stays on a deck gets to see.
Dinner Over the Water
The best resort restaurants here are built on stilts above the lagoon, and the lights from the deck attract fish to the water beneath you while you eat. Lagoon by Jean-Georges at the St Regis is the headline name, and there are quieter equivalents at the Four Seasons and the Conrad.

Bora Bora is one of the most expensive island destinations in the world, and one of the most consistent. The five lagoon resorts (Four Seasons, St Regis, Conrad, Westin and Le Bora Bora by Pearl) all operate at a true five-star standard, and the question on a Bora Bora trip is less about whether the hotel will deliver and more about which one suits you best.
Each one has a different character. The Four Seasons is the largest and most polished, with the strongest service and the best private lagoon for snorkelling out front. The St Regis has the biggest villas in French Polynesia and the most famous overwater dining at Lagoon by Jean-Georges.
The Conrad sits on its own motu with views of Otemanu across the lagoon, and is the favourite for couples who want quiet. The Westin and Le Bora Bora by Pearl offer the same lagoon and the same overwater bungalows at a slightly lower price point, and both are excellent.

Weather in Bora Bora
Getting to Bora Bora
Bora Bora is reached via Papeete’s Faa’a International Airport on Tahiti, followed by a 50-minute domestic flight with Air Tahiti to the island itself. The lagoon views on the descent are part of why people come.
From the US
Los Angeles is the natural gateway. Air Tahiti Nui and United both fly direct to Papeete in around 8 hours, and most travellers connect onward to Bora Bora the same day. From the East Coast, route via LAX and consider a night in Los Angeles on the way out if you’d rather break the journey.
From the UK
There is no direct flight from London. The most popular routing is via Los Angeles, with onward Air Tahiti Nui or United service to Papeete. Total journey time is around 22 hours including the transfer. Air France via Paris is the alternative, and a stopover in Paris on the way out works well for travellers who’d rather split the trip in two.
