Take a boat to a ribbon of white sand in the lagoon for a private dinner for two under Indian Ocean stars.
The Maldives’ Disappearing Islands

In the Maldives, some of the most memorable places are not islands at all. Sandbanks are narrow ribbons of white sand that rise from the lagoon, sometimes only for part of the day, with no buildings and nothing on them but the two of you.
For a honeymoon, they make the perfect setting for a private dinner or a long afternoon alone.
Out Of Office has sent many same-sex couples to the Maldives over the years, and a sandbank dinner is one of the experiences our clients talk about most.
Getting There

Your resort takes you out by boat, often in the late afternoon, to a sandbank in the lagoon nearby. Staff arrive ahead of you to set up a table, a canopy, and lanterns, then leave you to enjoy it.
Depending on the tides, the sandbank may be large enough to walk around or barely bigger than your table. Either way, the sense of isolation is complete.
Dinner at Sunset

As the sun goes down, the lagoon turns from turquoise to gold to deep blue. Dinner might be grilled seafood, a menu designed by the resort’s chef, or a simple picnic, served by a waiter who appears only when needed.
After dark, the stars over the Indian Ocean can be extraordinary. On some nights and in some places, the water along the shore glows with bioluminescent plankton.

At the resorts we work with, honeymoon benefits are extended to every couple, regardless of who you married. That can mean anything from a room upgrade to a special dinner or spa credit.
Some of our partner resorts can also arrange a private symbolic ceremony on the beach, often with the help of managers who are themselves gay. It is a personal celebration rather than a legal one, but for many couples it is the most meaningful part of the trip.
Your Days on the Island

Between sandbank dinners, honeymoon days in the Maldives tend to move slowly. Mornings might start with breakfast on your villa deck and a swim straight into the lagoon, followed by snorkelling on the house reef or a couples’ spa treatment.
Afternoons are for reading, napping and drifting, and evenings for watching the sun set over the water.
Knowing the Law
Same-sex relationships are illegal under Maldivian law, and same-sex marriage is not recognised. On resort islands, the atmosphere is international and relaxed, but the law still applies throughout the country, and greater discretion is sensible at the airport, in Malé and on inhabited islands.
You can read more in our blog, The Law vs. Reality: Gay Travel to the Maldives, which sets out what to expect so you can choose with confidence.
Planning Your Sandbank Experience
Sandbank dinners depend on tides and weather, so it is best to plan some flexibility into your stay. The drier months, from roughly December to April, offer the calmest seas. A stay of a week or more gives you time to settle in and enjoy several experiences at an unhurried pace.
Out Of Office can choose a resort that suits you as a couple, arrange private lounge access on arrival, and secure privileges such as private sandbank dinners and the best villas for privacy. Explore our honeymoons in the Maldives and our symbolic wedding in the Maldives, or ask your LGBTQ+ travel specialist about alternatives such as the Seychelles or French Polynesia if you would prefer a destination with more protective laws.
