Visit Sri Lanka's most sacred Buddhist shrine during its ritual hours with a private guide, then wander Peradeniya's botanic gardens.
A Relic Carried in a Princess’s Hair

Sri Dalada Maligawa, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, keeps what is venerated as the Buddha’s left canine, taken from his funeral pyre after a cremation traditionally dated to 543 BCE. Tradition says it came to Sri Lanka in the fourth century CE, hidden in the hair of Princess Hemamali as she fled with her brother, Prince Dantha. Your private visit takes you through the temple complex and then on into Kandy’s botanic gardens or the hills around the city.
Moat, Moonstone and Ivory Doors

The temple lies within the old Royal Palace grounds, reached across a moat through the Maha Vahalkada, a gateway set with a carved moonstone and guarded by stone elephants. On the upper floor of the two-story shrine, behind doors of carved ivory, is the relic chamber, the Handun Kunama. Above it all rises the octagonal Paththirippuwa, added in the early nineteenth century and now the temple library. Beyond, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya cover 147 acres in a bend of the Mahaweli River, with more than 4,000 plant species and a celebrated orchid collection.

No one sees the tooth itself. It lies within seven golden caskets, one inside the next, each shaped like a stupa and studded with rubies, emeralds and diamonds, and only the outer casket is revealed, and only during the daily ritual times at dawn, midday and evening, when monks of the Malwathu and Asgiri chapters lead worship. On Wednesdays the relic is symbolically bathed with scented water held to have healing powers, and the tooth is shown openly only at rare state exhibitions, sometimes decades apart.
Why Timing and a Guide Matter

Arriving during a ritual window is the difference between facing a closed inner chamber and witnessing the ceremony itself. Your private guide explains the history and symbolism as you go, from the relic’s long journeys between royal capitals to the buildings each Kandyan king added, and afterward the day carries on at an easy pace through the gardens or into the surrounding hills, shaped around you.
