The Kandy to Ella Train Through Sri Lanka’s Tea Country

Ride the colonial hill railway through tea estates, misty ridges and waterfalls, on the right side of the carriage, with seats booked ahead.

A Railway Built for Tea

Hill country railway line winding through green tea estates

The British built Sri Lanka’s hill railway in 1864 to carry tea, and later coffee, from the highlands down to Colombo for shipping. By the 1960s passengers had overtaken freight, and travellers have ridden this same mountain route ever since. A privately arranged journey from Kandy to Ella follows it through the central highlands, past tea estates, waterfalls and hills wrapped in mist.

Tea Rows, Ridges and the Nine Arch Bridge

Mist over forest along the ridge between Nuwara Eliya and Haputale

The scenery changes gradually as you climb, from Kandy’s lower valleys into true tea country around Hatton and Nuwara Eliya, where bushes cover the slopes in every direction, broken by waterfalls tumbling from above. Between Nuwara Eliya and Haputale the line follows a narrow ridge through the mist that hangs over the forest most mornings. Near Demodara, the Nine Arch Bridge appears, a viaduct finished in 1919 of stone, brick and cement, because wartime shortages ruled out steel, sweeping across the valley on its nine arches.

The hard part is not finding a beautiful place. It is finding the right one for you.

Slow Travel, Well Worth It

Passenger watching tea country from an open train window

The train takes its time through the hills, which is exactly the point, giving you time to watch the landscape unfold. The full highland journey takes around seven hours. Beyond Ella the line makes a rare engineering flourish, looping back across its own track at a different level as it descends toward Badulla. It’s a gentle, memorable day for a couple, friends or a solo traveller.

Why Book It Privately

Reserved window seats facing the valleys on the Kandy to Ella train

Where you sit makes a big difference. Heading from Kandy toward Ella, the right-hand side looks over the tea estates and valleys, while the left faces the cliffs, and booking privately means your seats are secured in advance instead of left to luck in a crowded carriage. You can also choose your time for the light, the misty morning giving the same landscape a very different mood from the afternoon. Your Out Of Office LGBTQ+ travel specialist can combine the ride with stays in Kandy and Ella, and our Sri Lanka guide covers LGBTQ+ rights and travel advice.
