Luxury Travel Expert"Sri Lanka is the ideal place to pair with a trip to the Maldives, offering a dose of cultural stimulation following a sumptuous Maldivian escape. There's also a bounty of luxury properties in Sri Lanka. "
Contact usSri Lanka is a tear-shaped island sitting off the southern tip of India in the Indian Ocean, separated from the mainland by the Palk Strait. It is small enough to cross by road in a few hours, yet varied enough to feel like several different countries within a single trip. The island has a population of around twenty-two million and a history of continuous civilisation stretching back over two thousand years.
The country divides roughly into the dry north and east, the wet southwest, and the central highlands. Colombo on the west coast is the commercial capital and main arrival point. The ancient city of Kandy in the hills is the cultural capital. The south coast from Galle east to Tangalle is the primary beach and luxury travel destination.
Sri Lanka uses the Sri Lankan rupee, drives on the left, and operates on SLST (UTC+5:30). Sinhala and Tamil are the official languages, with English widely spoken in cities, tourist areas and luxury properties. The country is predominantly Buddhist, and temple etiquette applies throughout, including covered shoulders and removed shoes when visiting religious sites.
Sri Lanka’s legal position on homosexuality requires honest handling. Same-sex activity technically remains criminalised under colonial-era legislation, though enforcement has been minimal for many years and the law has been subject to ongoing repeal debates. The situation is in flux and travelers should check current guidance before visiting.
In practice, LGBTQ+ travelers moving through Sri Lanka’s luxury circuit, the Cultural Triangle, the hill country, the south coast and Colombo, generally do so without difficulty. The hospitality industry is discreet and professional, and the boutique properties Out Of Office works with are welcoming to same-sex couples.
Colombo has a small but visible LGBTQ+ scene. Public displays of affection are best avoided, as they would be across much of South and Southeast Asia regardless of legal framework.
Sri Lanka is a destination where the experience on the ground is significantly more comfortable than the legal picture might suggest, and Out Of Office knows the properties and operators where LGBTQ+ guests are received with genuine warmth.
Sri Lanka moves through distinct regions, from the ancient cities of the Cultural Triangle to the tea-covered hill country and the beaches and colonial charm of the south coast, and a well-planned itinerary captures all of it without feeling hurried: the right properties at each stage, the right amount of time in each region, and a logical sequence between them makes an enormous difference to how the trip feels.
Sri Lanka also pairs naturally with the Maldives for those wanting to finish with a few nights of pure beach luxury.
Out Of Office builds Sri Lanka itineraries around your interests and pace, selects boutique properties that match the character of each region, and handles the Maldives extension seamlessly for those combining both.
Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle is home to some of the island’s most important historic sites. Sigiriya, a dramatic rock fortress rising above the jungle, is the standout attraction, while the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa showcase centuries of Buddhist history. Nearby Kandy, home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth, adds a vibrant cultural dimension and is often considered the island’s spiritual heart.
Sri Lanka’s central highlands are defined by rolling tea plantations, cooler temperatures and spectacular scenery. The train journey from Kandy to Ella is one of Asia’s most memorable rail experiences, winding through mist-covered mountains and tea estates. Boutique lodges and historic tea bungalows make this one of the most atmospheric regions of the island.
The south coast combines golden beaches, boutique hotels and some of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding coastal experiences. Historic Galle is the highlight, with its beautifully preserved Dutch fort, while Mirissa and Tangalle offer a more relaxed beach escape. Depending on the season, the region also offers excellent whale watching, surfing and easy access to some of the island’s most luxurious resorts.
Sri Lanka’s luxury hotel scene has developed rapidly and now includes some of the most distinctive boutique properties in Asia.
Ceylon Tea Trails in the hill country occupies a collection of restored colonial bungalows on a working tea estate, with butler service, open fires and views across the plantations that are unlike anything else in the region.
Water Garden Sigiriya sits within walking distance of the rock fortress with private pool villas set in landscaped gardens. Gal Oya Lodge in the national park offers an intimate safari experience from a tented camp on the edge of a reservoir.
On the south coast, properties like Kahanda Kanda and KK Beach combine serious design credentials with direct beach access.
The island also combines naturally with the Maldives, allowing a cultural itinerary to finish with a few nights of pure beach luxury at one of the Indian Ocean’s great overwater resorts.
We select Sri Lanka properties based on character, quality and fit, and handles the Maldives connection for those extending the trip.
