The Dylan Amsterdam is one of Europe’s more intriguing boutique hotels, occupying a building steeped in history. In 1632 the architect Jacob van Campen was commissioned to build a stone theater, which served as Amsterdam’s first theater where the legendary painter Rembrandt worked as a production assistant.
Tragically, on May 11th during a performance, the building caught fire and completely burned down, leaving only the foundations and memories of its theatrical past. The site remained dormant for centuries until 1998 when the building was completely renovated, reopening in 1999 as a luxury boutique hotel. This transformation from Amsterdam’s original theater to a contemporary luxury destination creates a unique narrative that permeates every aspect of the hotel experience, where you literally sleep within the walls that once echoed with 17th-century performances and housed one of history’s greatest artists during his formative years.
The Dylan’s extraordinary character lies in its position as an intimate 41-room boutique hotel that successfully balances historical significance with cutting-edge design, creating an atmosphere that feels more like staying in a sophisticated private residence than a traditional hotel. Located in a 17th-century canal house on the prestigious Keizersgracht – one of Amsterdam’s most famous canals – the hotel sits in the heart of the trendy shopping district “De Negen Straatjes” (The Nine Streets).

The hotel houses Restaurant Vinkeles, located in an authentic 18th-century bakery with garden views, which has earned two Michelin stars under executive chef Dennis Kuipers. The more casual Bar Brasserie OCCO has gained fame for its innovative “High Wine” experience – a sophisticated take on high tea that has become a beloved Amsterdam tradition – while the ultra-intimate restaurant “até” serves just six guests each night, making it Amsterdam’s smallest fine dining establishment.
