At a glance
A 5,000-acre private estate in the Val d’Orcia, built around a medieval borgo near Montalcino and operating as one of the most complete rural retreats in Italy.
The estate has been inhabited continuously since the 12th century and includes working vineyards producing Brunello di Montalcino, an 18-hole private golf course and a village of restored stone buildings at its center.
Rosewood took over management and brought the property to its current standard, but the bones are entirely Tuscan: the borgo, the winemaking heritage, the scale of the land. Montalcino is four miles away, Siena is 25 miles, and Florence is around two hours by car.
Accommodation runs to 42 suites within the borgo and 11 privately restored villas spread across the wider countryside, each converted from 17th and 18th-century farmhouses. Two restaurants, a spa, an on-site winery and Italy’s only private golf club make this a property well suited to guests who have no particular desire to leave.

Accommodation
Suites
The 42 suites occupy the restored buildings of the medieval borgo. Exposed wooden beams, antique furnishings and terracotta floors sit alongside modern amenities, with terraces and pergolas looking out over the Val d’Orcia landscape. Two-bedroom configurations are available for families or groups traveling together.
Villas
Eleven standalone villas converted from 17th and 18th-century farmhouses, each individually designed and positioned across the wider estate. All come with private terraces, gardens and heated infinity pools. A Land Rover Defender or similar 4×4 is included with each villa for the duration of the stay, a practical and well-considered detail given the scale of the grounds.
2-bedroom suite
The two two-bedroom suites, Casa del Vescovo and Casa Fontaccia, both sit within the medieval borgo and sleep four to five adults. Casa del Vescovo is the larger of the two at 200 square meters, with Florentine design details and a history as a bishop’s residence. Casa Fontaccia is slightly more private, with its own entrance, kitchenette and garden terrace, making it the closer option to a standalone villa experience without leaving the borgo.

Dining
Castiglion del Bosco runs five dining options across the estate. Ristorante Campo del Drago is the flagship, a Michelin-starred room offering an intimate, culture-led take on Tuscan cuisine using seasonal produce from local suppliers and the estate’s own organic kitchen garden. Osteria La Canonica sits within the borgo and takes a trattoria approach to the same regional ingredients, more relaxed in format and well suited to long lunches. The Lobby Bar covers afternoon tea, light snacks and cocktails beside a Tuscan fireplace. The Pool Bar handles casual poolside dining with simple Italian specialties. La Canonica Cooking School adds a hands-on option for guests who want to learn the techniques behind the food. During summer months, a Tuscan sagra takes over the borgo every Sunday evening from June to September.
Spa and Wellness
The spa draws its treatment philosophy from a historic Florentine apothecary, with a menu built around Tuscan botanical ingredients and traditions. Facilities include treatment rooms, a fitness center with estate views and two outdoor pools overlooking the Montalcino hills. The wellness offering extends well beyond the spa building: guided hiking along the Via Francigena and estate trails, cycling tours on road, mountain and vintage bikes, private yoga sessions in villa gardens or out on the grounds, and horseback riding across the wider estate. The approach throughout is less resort spa, more countryside immersion.
Experiences
The estate’s experience program is organized around four themes. Food and wine sits at the center, with Brunello di Montalcino tastings and winery tours, truffle hunting in the countryside and supper club dinners pairing Tuscan cooking with the estate’s own wines. Culture reaches beyond the grounds with a Val d’Orcia film location tour, hidden Siena walks and access to local artisan workshops. Nature activities include guided hikes, cycling, painting classes in the vineyards and private yoga. For families, the Rosewood Explorers children’s program uses the estate’s meadows and cypress groves as its backdrop.
