Mombo Camp sits on the northwestern tip of Chief’s Island within the Moremi Game Reserve, at the point where the Okavango Delta splits into its primary channels. The Yei people who lived in this area named it Mombo, meaning the place of plenty.

The camp overlooks an open floodplain where wildlife moves through year-round, and the concentrations of plains game and predators that define this stretch of Chief’s Island are considered among the highest of any privately managed area in Africa.

The camp was rebuilt under Wilderness Safaris and is fully solar powered, with walkways connecting nine elevated suites through a canopy of mangosteen and fig trees above the floodplain.

Chief’s Island is the largest landmass in the Okavango Delta and holds all of the Big Five, including both black and white rhino reintroduced through the Botswana Rhino Reintroduction Project. Access is by light aircraft only, with the Mombo airstrip a 15-minute game drive transfer from camp. The island is unfenced.

Food & Drink

Dining at Mombo operates without set hours. Meals are built around the rhythm of the day rather than a fixed schedule, with breakfast served before the morning drive, a bush brunch in the field on return, and dinner either in the open-air dining room, on the boma under the stars, or on the private deck of the suite on request. The menus change seasonally and draw on the best available produce.

A minibar in each suite is stocked with soft drinks and low-alcohol options, and staff are available via two-way radio at any point during the day. A wine cellar is available for guests with a specific interest in the list. Sundowners in the field, at one of the camp’s two photographic hides, or on the central viewing deck with the fire pit are a standard part of the daily rhythm.
