Since 1834, the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria has stood on a cliff above the Bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius on the horizon and the rooftops of Sorrento below. Nothing else on the Amalfi Coast has come close to matching it. This is not a hotel that tries to impress. It simply does.
Five generations of the Fiorentino family have owned and run this property without interruption, and that continuity shows in every detail, from the way the rooms are kept to the way a guest is looked after. Built on land associated with the villa of Emperor Augustus, the history here is real and it runs deep. The winter garden retains its original Belle Époque furniture and locally crafted antiques, pieces that have never left the property.
Then there is room 448. Enrico Caruso spent several months here in 1921, and the suite has remained untouched ever since. Decades later, Lucio Dalla was given the same room and wrote the song that made Caruso immortal. It remains the most requested suite in the hotel, and it is not difficult to understand why.
What makes the Excelsior Vittoria worth booking today is not its past. It is what that past has produced. A Michelin-starred kitchen, seventy-nine individually decorated rooms and suites, and a level of service that only nearly two centuries of practice can produce.

Accommodation
Rooms
The standard rooms here bear little resemblance to what that category usually implies. Each one is individually decorated, finished with frescoed ceilings, Vietri tilework and a marble bathroom, and furnished with pieces that have their own history.
The sea-facing rooms look out across the full sweep of the Bay of Naples, with Mount Vesuvius anchoring the horizon and the water stretching out below, the kind of view that makes it genuinely difficult to leave the room in the morning.
Garden rooms offer a quieter outlook across five acres of private Mediterranean grounds, where citrus and olive trees line the paths and the stillness makes them the natural choice for anyone who values seclusion over spectacle.
Suites
Spread across seven categories, the suites at the Excelsior Vittoria defy easy comparison. Each one is individually composed, dressed in the finest Italian fabrics, and carries a level of finish that transforms the accommodation into something closer to a private residence than a hotel room. Choosing between them is part of the experience.
One of a Kind Suites
For those who want to go further, the One of a Kind suites offer something that exists nowhere else on this coast. Each suite is dedicated to a guest or era that shaped the hotel’s history, furnished with original pieces, its own distinct identity, and a story that makes the choice of room feel like a decision rather than a booking. The Caruso Suite is the most celebrated: room 448, preserved exactly as Enrico Caruso left it in 1921, and later the room where Lucio Dalla wrote the song that made Caruso immortal. There is no equivalent anywhere else on the Amalfi Coast.

Food & Drink
Terrazza Bosquet
The hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant, built around a menu of Mediterranean creativity using the season’s best local ingredients. The terrace looks out across the bay and the Sorrento rooftops, a setting that earns its place alongside the food rather than compensating for it.
L’Orangerie
The poolside bar and restaurant, open for lunch and dinner throughout the summer. Mediterranean in character, local in ingredient, and lighter in touch than you might expect. The wood-fired pizza is the most ordered dish in the hotel for good reason.
Terrazza Vittoria
By general agreement the finest terrace in Sorrento. A menu of Neapolitan and international specialities, a position above the bay, and the kind of late afternoon light that makes it almost impossible to ask for the bill.
Ristorante Vittoria
Mornings begin here. The hotel’s dedicated breakfast venue, set against one of the most quietly spectacular backdrops in southern Italy, stocked entirely with the produce of Campania
Spa & Wellbeing
La Serra Boutique Spa sits within the hotel’s private gardens, housed in a converted nineteenth-century greenhouse among olive and orange trees. It is intimate by design, with three treatment cabins and a private couples suite with its own jacuzzi and garden, built around a menu of Valmont facials, signature rituals and body treatments. Small, considered and restful.
The pool sits beside the spa, opening onto a solarium with loungers and a whirlpool hydro-massage. L’Orangerie is steps away, which means there is very little reason to move for the better part of a day. A Technogym fitness centre and personal training on request are also available.
