Travel Information for Jordan

General Information

Jordan has delighted tourists for many years with its fascinating World Heritage sites including the ancient city of Petra, which is the focal point of Jordan. This ancient city has been chiselled out of the cliffs and it lay forgotten for centuries known only to the Bedouin (a native Arab group) who made it their home until it was discovered by Jean Louis Burckhardt, a swiss explorer. Other great historical sites also include the Roman Ruins and Umm Qais.

The traditional culture which is still very much a part of people’s lives is a wonderful thing to experience.

Then you have the awesome geographical landscape such as the majestic Wadi Rum desert which encounters deadly heat and the bitter cold all in 24 hours. Take a camel ride and take in the weathered sandstone and endless sand plains. Taking a swim in the Dead Sea is also a weird and wonderful experience, the high salt concentration means you float on the surface of the water. If you fancy a bit of adventure and are looking to cool off from the hot sunshine then head to the Red Sea as it is renowned for scuba diving.

Jordan LGBTQ+ Rights

LGBTQ+ rights in Jordan are limited, and individuals face both social and legal challenges. While homosexuality is not explicitly criminalized, there are no specific protections against discrimination or hate crimes based on sexual orientation or gender identity. This legal gap leaves LGBTQ+ individuals vulnerable in a society where conservative norms dominate.

Same-sex marriage is not recognized, and public displays of affection between same-sex couples can result in legal scrutiny or public backlash. The stigma surrounding LGBTQ+ identities often leads individuals to conceal their sexual orientation or gender identity, particularly in rural or traditional areas. In urban centers like Amman, there is slightly more privacy and tolerance, but open expression of LGBTQ+ identity remains rare.

Advocacy groups working to promote LGBTQ+ rights exist in Jordan but operate within strict limitations, reflecting the broader societal and governmental constraints on activism. Public events or campaigns focused on LGBTQ+ issues are rare, as they risk backlash or closure.

For LGBTQ+ travelers, discretion is advised. While Jordan’s historic sites and natural beauty make it a popular destination, understanding the cultural context and adhering to local norms is essential for a safe and respectful visit. Despite the challenges, there are small but resilient LGBTQ+ networks and communities striving for greater visibility and acceptance within Jordan’s conservative framework.

What Everyone Does In Jordan

A visit to the ancient city of Petra is the quintessential Jordanian experience and an absolute must for any traveler. Known as the “Rose-Red City” due to the natural hues of its sandstone cliffs, Petra is an architectural marvel carved directly into the rocks by the Nabataeans over 2,000 years ago. The journey begins with a walk through the Siq, a narrow gorge that dramatically opens up to reveal the awe-inspiring Al-Khazneh, or Treasury—a sight that never fails to leave visitors speechless. Exploring Petra’s sprawling archaeological site is like stepping back in time, with its temples, tombs, and amphitheater offering a vivid look into the ingenuity of this ancient civilization.

Petra’s allure is not just its iconic landmarks but also its atmosphere. As you wander through its ancient streets, the interplay of light and shadow on the cliffs changes throughout the day, creating a mesmerizing effect. Many visitors choose to experience Petra by night, when the site is illuminated by thousands of candles, adding a magical dimension to this historic wonder. It’s an experience that resonates with travelers of all ages and leaves an indelible mark on their journey through Jordan.

What Some People Do In Jordan

The Roman ruins of Jerash are a treasure trove for history enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into one of the best-preserved ancient Roman cities outside of Italy. Known as the “Pompeii of the East,” Jerash is home to a spectacular array of ruins, including colonnaded streets, amphitheaters, temples, and imposing gates that once served as the city’s fortifications. The grand oval-shaped forum, lined with tall, graceful columns, is particularly striking and offers a vivid sense of the city’s past grandeur.

For those with a deeper interest in Roman history, Jerash offers fascinating stories of its role as a bustling trade center and cultural hub. Visitors can imagine the thrill of chariot races in the hippodrome or marvel at the intricate carvings on the Temple of Artemis. A guided tour reveals details of daily life in the ancient city, making Jerash not just a sightseeing spot, but a living classroom of history and architecture.

What No One Else Does In Jordan

While Wadi Rum’s iconic desert landscapes are famous, few travelers take the opportunity to see this vast, otherworldly expanse from the air. A plane ride over Wadi Rum offers a truly unique perspective, allowing you to grasp the sheer scale of its dramatic cliffs, endless sand dunes, and striking rock formations. From above, the desert transforms into an abstract masterpiece, with its red and golden hues blending together like a natural painting.

This experience is not just about the views—it’s also about the serenity. Flying over Wadi Rum allows you to escape the heat and bustle on the ground and soak in the desert’s timeless beauty in quiet awe. It’s a perspective few ever witness, making it a truly exclusive and unforgettable addition to any Jordan itinerary. For those seeking unparalleled adventure and a new way to connect with this majestic landscape, this aerial journey is a must.
