Thailand Gay Honeymoons
Thailand legalised same-sex marriage in January 2025, becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to do so, and it’s long been considered one of the most LGBTQ+-welcoming destinations in Asia even before that. That combination of legal standing and an established gay scene, from Bangkok’s Silom district to Phuket’s Patong, makes it one of the more compelling honeymoon choices outside Europe.
Thailand gives honeymooners a run of very different experiences in one trip.
A couple can start on the beaches of Koh Samui or Phuket, move north to the temples and street markets of Chiang Mai, then spend a night or two in Bangkok before flying home. Few destinations offer that much range without adding long internal flights or a change of country.
Wat Arun is worth timing around sunset, when its spires catch the light off the Chao Phraya River. The Grand Palace and Wat Pho’s reclining Buddha go deeper still, into centuries of royal history that a rushed visit tends to miss entirely.
Krabi’s cliffside hotels sit above limestone karsts rising straight out of the sea, while Phuket and Koh Samui hold some of Southeast Asia’s best resorts, many with private pool villas built right into the hillside or the sand.
The islands do most of the heavy lifting for the classic honeymoon image, with warm water, palm-lined beaches, and resorts built specifically around couples wanting privacy. But Thailand’s honeymoon appeal goes beyond the coast. Floating markets, hill tribe villages, elephant sanctuaries, and some of the best street food in the world give couples a reason to leave the resort as well as stay in it.

Planning A Gay Honeymoon In Thailand
A Thailand honeymoon is built around contrast: island seclusion one week, city energy the next, connected by flights that rarely run longer than ninety minutes.
Thailand is multifaceted and lets a couple combine an overwater-bungalow-style stay on Koh Samui with a completely different few days in Chiang Mai or Bangkok, all on domestic flights that rarely run longer than ninety minutes.
Value is a real factor in this decision too. A five-star resort in Phuket or Koh Samui typically costs a fraction of an equivalent property in the Maldives or French Polynesia, which means couples can book a longer trip or upgrade to a pool villa without stretching the budget as far.
On the LGBTQ+ side, Thailand’s acceptance is well established rather than a recent development. Bangkok has hosted a visible gay scene for decades, and same-sex couples are a familiar sight at hotels across the main tourist islands.
That said, public affection is still generally more low-key here than in Western destinations, which is worth knowing before the trip rather than discovering on arrival.
Beach, jungle and city on one trip using short domestic flights
2Five star resorts at a fraction of Maldives or Bora Bora prices
3Bangkok's gay scene, one of the oldest and largest in Asia
4Elephant sanctuaries and floating markets alongside the beach days

Thailand’s range means a honeymoon here rarely feels like one long stretch of sun loungers, even for couples who want plenty of beach time. On Koh Samui or Phuket, days can center on private beach dinners, sunset cruises around limestone islands, or a couples massage using traditional Thai techniques. Krabi and the surrounding bays add the option of a longtail boat trip to quieter beaches only reachable by water.
Chiang Mai offers a complete change of pace. Couples can visit an ethical elephant sanctuary, take a cooking class in a local market, or watch lanterns released over the river during a festival visit. Bangkok rounds out the trip with rooftop bars overlooking the skyline, a river cruise past the Grand Palace, and some of the country’s most inventive fine dining.
Wellness is easy to build in throughout, from spa days at beach resorts to traditional Thai massage in Chiang Mai, giving couples a slower moment between the more active parts of the trip.

The Best Gay Beaches in Thailand
Thailand has emerged as Asia's most progressive destination for LGBTQ+ travel, crowned by its historic achievement as the first Southeast Asian nation to legalise same-sex marriage in January 2025. Thailand is also one of the best beach destinations on the planet. From the gay beach clubs of Koh Samui to the nightlife of Phuket's Paradise Complex, Thailand’s beaches are waiting to be explored.
ReadBest Time For A Gay Honeymoon In Thailand
November through February, Thailand’s cool season, is the strongest window for a honeymoon, with daytime temperatures in the mid-80s and lower humidity comfortable for both Bangkok sightseeing and beach time on either coast. This is also peak season, so the Christmas and New Year weeks in particular should be booked well in advance.
Thailand’s two coasts run on different monsoon patterns, which is worth knowing when planning an island stay. The Andaman coast, including Phuket and Krabi, sees its rain roughly May through October, while the Gulf coast, including Koh Samui, instead gets its wet season from October through December. January through April is the one stretch when both coasts are reliably dry, making it the easiest time to combine an Andaman and a Gulf island in one trip.
March through May is hot season, with Bangkok and the islands regularly climbing into the 90s, and mid-April brings Songkran, the water festival, a lively but crowded time to be in Bangkok rather than a restful one.
The best trips begin with a conversation, not a booking form.

Bangkok and Phuket are the most popular pairing within a bespoke Thailand itinerary, with two or three nights in the capital for temples and Silom’s gay nightlife followed by a short flight to Phuket for beaches, Patong’s bar scene, and day trips to Phi Phi.
Bangkok and Koh Samui form an equally strong alternative on a similarly short flight, with Samui suited to a quieter, more upscale resort stay and easy add-on time to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao. Couples with more time often add Chiang Mai in the north for temples and cooler mountain air before heading to a beach.
Siem Reap and Angkor Wat, in neighboring Cambodia, are a short flight from Bangkok and a well-established add-on for couples who want a cultural counterpoint to Thailand’s beaches, easily combined within a ten- to fourteen-day itinerary.
No two trips we plan are the same. Yours will be no exception.

Is Thailand a good honeymoon destination for gay couples?
Thailand is widely considered one of the more relaxed and welcoming destinations in Asia for LGBTQ+ travelers, with Bangkok in particular known for a large and long-established gay scene. Public displays of affection tend to be more reserved than in Western countries, which is worth keeping in mind while planning the trip.
When is the best time to visit Thailand for a honeymoon?
The cool and dry season from November to February offers the most comfortable weather across most of the country. March to May is hotter, and the rainy season from June to October brings short afternoon downpours but fewer crowds and lower rates.
Which is better for a honeymoon, Phuket or Koh Samui?
Phuket offers more nightlife and a larger, more established gay scene around Patong, while Koh Samui is quieter and more resort-focused, better suited to couples who want beach time without much going on after dinner.
How many days should we plan for a Thailand honeymoon?
Seven to ten days covers Bangkok plus one island comfortably. Couples adding Chiang Mai or a second island should plan closer to twelve to fourteen days.
Can Out Of Office help plan a same-sex honeymoon in Thailand?
Yes. Out Of Office specializes in tailor-made LGBTQ+ honeymoons to Thailand, working with hotels and partners who understand the needs of same-sex couples, from room configuration to on-the-ground experiences.

Tailor-made HolidayScotland might not be warm and sunny but it's very romantic. Edinburgh is one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities, dense with history, excellent restaurants and an LGBTQ+ scene that has been at the heart of the city for decades.
