Visiting the Oracle of Delphi, Greece

Explore ancient Delphi on a private guided tour, from the Temple of Apollo and legendary Oracle to the Sacred Way, museum and Mount Parnassus.

For much of the ancient Greek world, important decisions could begin with a journey into the mountains. Kings, generals, city-states and ordinary citizens travelled to Delphi to consult Apollo through his oracle, asking questions about war, politics, colonisation, marriage and the future.

The oracle herself is, regrettably, no longer operating. But Delphi remains one of Greece’s most extraordinary archaeological sites, spread across the slopes of Mount Parnassus above a vast valley of olive trees. The Centre of the Ancient World

To the ancient Greeks, Delphi wasn’t simply important; it marked the centre of the world.

Myth told that Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of the earth and they met at Delphi. The spot was marked by the omphalos, or navel stone, and the sanctuary that developed around it became one of the most important religious centres in Greece.

Pilgrims arrived from across the Mediterranean. Cities built elaborate treasuries along the Sacred Way to display their wealth and commemorate victories, while offerings to Apollo accumulated throughout the sanctuary.

Walking uphill today follows much the same ceremonial route. You pass the reconstructed Treasury of the Athenians before reaching the great Temple of Apollo, with the mountains rising around it.

Consulting the Oracle

The reason so many people came was the Pythia, the priestess through whom Apollo was believed to speak.

Those seeking advice submitted questions and made offerings before selected enquiries were put to the oracle. The Pythia entered the inner part of Apollo’s temple and delivered responses that were interpreted and communicated to those consulting her.

Some became famous precisely because they could be understood in more than one way. Ancient accounts repeatedly present rulers acting on an oracle only to discover that its meaning was rather less straightforward than they had hoped.

The institution endured for centuries. Decisions concerning military campaigns, the founding of colonies and affairs of state could all be brought before Delphi, giving the sanctuary influence far beyond this isolated mountainside.

Today you can stand beside the remains of Apollo’s temple and see where the ancient consultation took place. What you cannot do is ask the Pythia whether you should extend your holiday by three nights. For that, you’ll need your travel specialist.

Beyond the Temple

Keep climbing and Delphi continues above the temple. The ancient theatre sits dramatically against the slope, looking down across the sanctuary and valley, while higher still is the stadium where the Pythian Games were held.

These competitions were among the great Panhellenic festivals of ancient Greece. Like the games at Olympia, they drew competitors from across the Greek world, although Delphi combined athletics with musical and artistic contests particularly appropriate to Apollo, god of music as well as prophecy.

Below the principal sanctuary lies the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia. Its circular Tholos, with three reconstructed columns, has become one of Delphi’s most recognisable sights and is worth seeing separately rather than rushing back to the car.

Why Go Privately

Delphi rewards explanation more than hurried sightseeing. Without context, it’s easy to see a succession of foundations, columns and broken walls. With a knowledgeable private guide, the political rivalries, myths and rituals behind them begin to connect.

The museum is essential. Finds from the sanctuary include the bronze Charioteer of Delphi, one of the great surviving sculptures of ancient Greece, alongside architectural fragments, offerings and the original omphalos associated with Delphi’s status as the centre of the world.

Mountains, Olives and Arachova

The setting is almost as memorable as the archaeology. Delphi lies high on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, with the land dropping dramatically towards the Gulf of Corinth. Below stretches the immense olive landscape of the Crisaean Plain.

Nearby Arachova makes a natural addition to the day. The mountain town is known today for stone houses, tavernas and, in winter, its proximity to the ski slopes of Parnassus. Lunch there gives you time away from the archaeological site before the journey back towards Athens.

Delphi can be visited as a long day trip from the capital, but spending a night in the area gives the site more room to breathe and lets you experience the mountains after the day-trip coaches have gone.

Planning Your Visit

Allow several hours for the archaeological site and museum, and wear proper shoes: Delphi climbs steeply and ancient paving can be uneven. Spring and autumn bring comfortable walking weather, while summer visits are best started early before the heat builds on the exposed hillside.
