French Polynesia is one of the great romantic destinations on earth, and one of the few places that consistently lives up to its own mythology. Spread across five archipelagos and 118 islands in the South Pacific, it combines volcanic peaks draped in jungle, lagoons of an improbable turquoise intensity, and some of the most accomplished luxury hospitality anywhere in the world.
Here at Out Of Office, we truly understand the world you live in, and the world you want to explore. Our attention to detail, exceptional service and deep understanding of both luxury travel and LGBTQ+ travel make us a fantastic choice for those looking for a travel experience where exclusivity meets inclusivity.
Bora Bora’s overwater bungalows, suspended above water so clear you can watch reef sharks circle below from your bedroom floor, have become one of the defining images of what a luxury vacation can look like.
Beyond Bora Bora, the islands offer genuine variety. Tahiti is the main gateway and a destination in its own right, its black-sand beaches and interior mountain landscape a dramatic counterpoint to the coral atoll perfection of the outer islands.
Mo’orea rises from the sea in a series of shark-fin peaks visible from Tahiti’s shore and surrounds itself with one of the Pacific’s finest reef systems. The Tuamotu archipelago, further out, delivers the atolls and dive conditions that serious underwater travelers come specifically to experience. And running through almost all of it is one of the world’s great luxury products: Tahitian black pearls, cultivated in the lagoons and sold in the markets of Papeete and the boutiques of the finest resorts.
French Polynesia is also one of the most genuinely LGBTQ+ friendly destinations in the Pacific, and that openness has deep cultural roots. The Mahu, a third gender recognized in Polynesian culture for centuries before European contact, are an integral part of Tahitian society, and the broader social attitude toward LGBTQ+ people across the islands reflects that history. Homosexuality has never been criminalized here.
Same-sex marriage has been legal since France extended its 2013 legislation to its overseas territories.

French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity, which means French law applies, the currency is the CFP Franc, and French is the official language alongside Tahitian. English is widely spoken across the main tourist islands and at all luxury properties. No visa is required for US, UK, EU, Canadian, or Australian citizens for stays of up to 90 days.
The islands span five archipelagos across an area of ocean roughly the size of Western Europe, though the total land mass is small. Most luxury itineraries concentrate on the Society Islands, which include Tahiti, Mo’orea, Bora Bora, Taha’a, and Raiatea, with the Tuamotu atolls added for travelers who want world-class diving. Inter-island travel is by Air Tahiti on short domestic flights, typically 30 to 45 minutes between the main islands, or by private catamaran for those who want to move between destinations at their own pace on the water.
The time zone runs ten hours behind GMT, making French Polynesia one of the last inhabited places on earth to see each new day. The climate is warm year-round, with a drier, cooler season from May to October that is generally considered the best time to visit. The wet season from November to April brings higher humidity and occasional tropical rain, though at the luxury level most properties are designed to make the most of any conditions.
Tipping is not customary in French Polynesia and is not expected at luxury resorts, where service is included. The standard of hospitality at the top properties is among the highest in the South Pacific, and the Polynesian approach to hosting sets the tone across the islands regardless of where you stay.
French Polynesia’s relationship with gender and sexuality has never followed Western conventions, and that is not a recent development. The Mahu, individuals who occupy a third gender position in Polynesian culture, have been recognized and integrated into Tahitian society for centuries, long before European contact introduced more binary frameworks. That cultural history gives French Polynesia’s openness toward LGBTQ+ travelers a grounding that goes considerably deeper than legislation.
The legislation itself is also strong. Homosexuality has never been criminalized in French Polynesia. Same-sex marriage has been legal since France extended its 2013 Marriage for All law to its overseas territories, making French Polynesia one of the first places in the Pacific to recognize equal marriage rights. French anti-discrimination law applies across the territory, covering employment, housing, and public services.
In practice, the islands are relaxed and welcoming. The luxury resort environment that most LGBTQ+ travelers move within is entirely open, same-sex couples are received without distinction at every property we work with, and the broader Polynesian social culture is warm and inclusive in a way that reflects its own traditions rather than imported attitudes.
For LGBTQ+ travelers looking for a honeymoon or celebration trip that combines world-class luxury with a destination where they can be entirely at ease, French Polynesia is one of the strongest options anywhere in the South Pacific.
Most French Polynesia itineraries follow a natural arc through the Society Islands, opening in Tahiti before moving through Mo’orea and on to Bora Bora, with extensions for those who want to go further. The classic three-island structure works well and covers the main experiences, but the decisions within it matter more than the routing itself. Which resort on Bora Bora you stay at, and which category of overwater bungalow, makes an enormous difference to the experience. The lagoon view from a Conrad villa is not the same as from a Four Seasons or a St Regis, and knowing which property suits which traveler is where our expertise earns its place.
For travelers who want something beyond the well-trodden circuit, The Brando on the private atoll of Tetiaroa is the most exclusive address in French Polynesia and one of the most remarkable resort experiences in the world. Originally Marlon Brando’s private island, it operates on a carbon-neutral model with just 35 villas and some of the most pristine reef in the Pacific on its doorstep. Nukutepipi, another private island, takes exclusivity even further. These are properties that require advance planning and the right guidance to access well.
Logistics in French Polynesia are more involved than most destinations, and getting them right makes a significant difference. Inter-island flights on Air Tahiti book out quickly in peak season, speedboat and helicopter transfers need coordinating with arrival times, and some of the outer island properties have narrow check-in windows tied to flight schedules. We handle all of it, so the only decision left to you is how long to stay on the water before moving on.
Bora Bora’s overwater bungalows are one of the iconic luxury travel experiences on the planet, and the reality matches the image. The lagoon here is among the most vividly colored bodies of water anywhere, ranging from deep cobalt in the channel to a shallow, almost luminous turquoise over the coral shelves, and the best bungalows position you directly above it with glass floor panels, private decks, and direct water access from your own steps.
The Tuamotu archipelago, a chain of low coral atolls stretching across a vast stretch of the South Pacific, contains some of the best diving conditions in the world. Rangiroa and Fakarava are the two most celebrated, both UNESCO biosphere reserves, with drift dives through passes where sharks, dolphins, and manta rays congregate in numbers that are difficult to describe without sounding like an exaggeration.
Fakarava’s south pass in particular is considered one of the great dive sites on earth. A dedicated few nights in the Tuamotus, added to a Society Islands itinerary, transforms a luxury beach vacation into something altogether more extraordinary.
Tahitian black pearls are cultivated in the lagoons of the Tuamotu and Gambier archipelagos and are among the most distinctive luxury products in the world, ranging in color from deep charcoal to aubergine, peacock green, and silver. Papeete’s municipal market is the most accessible place to see and buy them, but the finest pieces are found through specialist pearl farmers and jewelers who can walk you through the grading criteria, the cultivation process, and what separates a truly exceptional pearl from the merely beautiful.
French Polynesia sits at the very top of the global luxury travel market, and has done for decades. The overwater bungalow as a concept was invented here, at the Hotel Bora Bora in 1967, and the islands have spent the intervening years refining what that experience can be. The Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora is the benchmark property on the island, with 100 overwater and beach pavilions arranged around a deep lagoon, a house reef directly accessible from the villas, and a level of service that justifies the positioning.
The St Regis Bora Bora brings a more formal grandeur, with some of the largest overwater villas in the archipelago. The Conrad Bora Bora Nui occupies a hillside and reef position that gives it views across the lagoon to Mount Otemanu that no other property on the island can match.
For those who want to move beyond Bora Bora, Le Taha’a by Pearl Resorts sits on a private motu on the island of Taha’a, surrounded by a vanilla-scented interior and one of the best house reefs in the Society Islands.
The Brando on Tetiaroa operates at a level of exclusivity and environmental sustainability that sets it apart from everything else in the archipelago, 35 villas on a private atoll with carbon-neutral operations, a marine research station on site, and a culinary program built around the island’s own organic gardens. Nukutepipi takes the private island concept even further, available only on a full buyout basis for groups who want the entire atoll to themselves.
The underwater world is part of the luxury offer here in a way that is unusual even by South Pacific standards. Private dive charters, marine biologist guides, and dedicated snorkel excursions to the outer reef systems are standard inclusions at the top properties rather than optional extras.

The main gateway is Faa’a International Airport in Papeete, Tahiti, and the primary US routing is with Air Tahiti Nui, which operates direct flights from Los Angeles to Papeete in around eight hours. French Bee also flies the LAX route at a lower price point, though Air Tahiti Nui’s Poerava Business Class is the comfortable choice for a long-haul arrival into a destination where you want to step off the plane ready to enjoy it.
From the East Coast, the standard routing connects through Los Angeles, adding around five hours to the total journey time. Air Tahiti Nui also operates a direct service from New York JFK, making it one of the more straightforward South Pacific destinations to reach from the eastern seaboard.
From the UK and Europe, the most common routing connects through Los Angeles or Paris, with Air Tahiti Nui operating direct services from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Papeete in around seventeen hours. Travelers connecting through Paris have the option of a seamless same-terminal transfer on a single Air Tahiti Nui ticket, which simplifies the journey considerably.
Once in Tahiti, inter-island travel is handled by Air Tahiti, whose domestic network connects the main Society Islands in flights of 30 to 45 minutes. For travelers moving between Tahiti, Mo’orea, Bora Bora, and Taha’a, speedboat and helicopter transfers are available and are often the more practical option depending on resort location.
