We recommend

Beach holidays have always had an outsized place in gay travel. Some of the world’s best-known LGBTQ+ destinations grew around particular stretches of coastline: Sitges, Mykonos, Puerto Vallarta, Fire Island and Maspalomas among them.

The climate is obviously part of the appeal, but these places became much more than somewhere to lie in the sun. Gay beaches developed alongside bars, clubs, hotels and restaurants, creating destinations where the beach sits inside a much wider LGBTQ+ social scene.

In Sitges, the beaches are only a few minutes from the gay bars in town. In Puerto Vallarta, the beach scene and Zona Romántica are closely connected. Mykonos has spent decades attracting an international gay crowd to the Greek islands every summer.

That combination still explains why beach holidays remain one of the most popular ways for LGBTQ+ travellers to see the world.

You can spend the day by the sea, head into a gay scene later, or simply enjoy being somewhere where a large LGBTQ+ crowd has gathered for the season.

Not every great LGBTQ+ beach holiday needs a gay beach, though.

The Maldives, French Polynesia, Mauritius and the Seychelles offer something very different, where the quality of the hotel, privacy and service matter more than having a local gay scene. The right beach trip depends on whether you want to be in the middle of the social whirl or far from the crowds.

LGBTQ-Friendly Beach Vacations

Where the Gay Scene Meets the Beach

Mykonos is the luxury version. In summer it draws an international gay jet set, with Elia Beach, JackieO’, high-end villas, big-name beach clubs and some of the most expensive hotels in Greece all feeding into the same social season. The island works brilliantly on its own, but it also gives you an obvious starting point for a wider Cyclades trip, adding Santorini, Paros or Naxos once you have had enough of the scene.

Sitges is easier and more compact. Bassa Rodona is right in town and draws a predominantly LGBTQ+ crowd, while the bars, restaurants and hotels are close enough that you rarely need to think about logistics. It is lively, polished and very social without requiring a whole week of commitment. The other advantage is Barcelona: stay in Sitges for the beach and gay scene, then add a few nights in the city for Gaudí, restaurants and culture.

Puerto Vallarta is the obvious choice for North American travelers who want scale. Zona Romántica has one of the largest concentrations of LGBTQ+ nightlife, hotels, restaurants and beach clubs anywhere in Latin America, with Playa Los Muertos sitting right alongside it. The scene is big enough that PV feels more like a genuine gay destination than a resort town with a handful of gay venues attached. It also works especially well from the US because you can get the beach, nightlife and a substantial LGBTQ+ community without crossing the Atlantic.

There are plenty of other ways to do it, from Ibiza to Fire Island, but these examples show why “gay beach vacation” can mean very different things. Mykonos is about luxury and the summer social circuit. Sitges gives you an easy beach-and-city combination. Puerto Vallarta gives you a huge year-round scene with the beach built straight into it. The right choice depends far more on the kind of trip you want than on which stretch of sand has the biggest rainbow flag.

French Polynesia

One Beach, One Island or an Island-Hop?

Mykonos can easily fill a week, but it also works well as part of a wider Greek trip. Pair it with Paros or Naxos for a quieter second island, or add Santorini if you want a different style of hotel and landscape.

French Polynesia is particularly well suited to moving around. Tahiti, Taha’a, Moorea and Bora Bora offer noticeably different experiences, so a multi-island trip often makes more sense than spending the whole vacation in one resort.

The Maldives is different again. Each resort occupies its own island, which means a split stay is really about choosing two properties with enough contrast to justify the transfer. One might have a better house reef, another a larger villa, better restaurants or a livelier atmosphere.

Other destinations are better left alone. Puerto Vallarta works perfectly well as a single base because the beach, restaurants and LGBTQ+ scene are already concentrated in one place.

The best choice depends on whether moving adds something meaningful to the trip or simply steals time from the beach.

Why Book an LGBTQ+ Beach Vacation With Out Of Office?

Out Of Office is the world’s leading luxury LGBTQ+ travel company, and beach vacations are one of the areas where that specialist knowledge makes a real difference.

In destinations such as Sitges, Mykonos or Puerto Vallarta, we know that location can determine the whole experience. Being near the right beach, neighborhood or nightlife area can matter more than choosing the most famous hotel.

In places such as the Maldives, Mauritius or French Polynesia, the priorities are different. There may be little or no LGBTQ+ scene, so the focus shifts to choosing the right resort, understanding the local environment and making sure the property is a good fit for you.

We can also turn a straightforward beach stay into something much more ambitious, whether that means island-hopping through Greece, combining several islands in French Polynesia, or pairing a beach with a safari, city break or cultural trip.
