A gay destination wedding is perfect if you’re seeking a more intimate and personal celebration. As inclusive luxury travel experts, we can guide you through the legal aspects of gay weddings abroad, civil unions, and symbolic ceremonies, offering the best gay wedding packages tailored to your destination—whether that’s a beach ceremony in Mexico’s Riviera Maya or a traditional Polynesian wedding in Bora Bora. Gay Wedding Checklist
Planning a wedding abroad can be more stressful than planning one at home. Depending on how far you intend to travel, you may not have seen the venue in person before arriving—and there can be a gap between the image you had in mind and the reality on the ground.
It’s important to be clear about what you want from your wedding. Do you want your marriage to be legally recognized back home, or would you prefer to get legally married in the US before traveling and then have a symbolic beach ceremony abroad?
There are a lot of questions to consider, and when planning a gay wedding, it’s important to be aware of the legal requirements involved. We’ve planned many same-sex weddings in destinations around the world and are always expanding our portfolio. Submit an inquiry, and one of our expert team members will reach out to schedule an initial consultation and get things rolling.

A Perfect Gay Wedding In South Africa
You’re planning a wedding and honeymoon, and you want somewhere that can actually carry both. South Africa is unusually good at that. You can get married overlooking the Atlantic in Cape Town, among the vineyards of Franschhoek, or at a safari lodge with the bush stretching out behind you. Then the honeymoon can begin without changing countries.

ReadGay Wedding And Minimoon
Gay minimoons are a great option if, for any reason, you’re unable to travel to your full honeymoon destination right away. It might not be the right season in the country you’re planning to visit, or maybe you can’t take much time off work. A minimoon offers the perfect solution—a chance to unwind with your new spouse immediately after the wedding.
Whether it’s a weekend escape to a Lapland igloo hotel or a city break in Rome, the possibilities are endless—and you can make it as luxurious as you want. The best part? Once your minimoon ends, you still have your full honeymoon to look forward to.
Planning a wedding can be time-consuming and stressful, so why not enjoy a relaxing weekend away as a couple before the big day? It’s a great reason to take that short break you’ve always talked about—and let’s be honest, it’s the perfect excuse to book another trip.
Symbolic Gay Weddings
In many countries where same-sex marriage isn’t legal, you can still have a beautiful symbolic gay wedding. This typically means having a legal ceremony at home before traveling, followed by a symbolic ceremony abroad in your chosen destination. The beauty of symbolic weddings is the flexibility—they open up a wide range of destinations where you’ll still receive a warm welcome, even without full legal recognition.
Japan
If you’re looking for a truly unique wedding experience, Japan offers the chance to celebrate your love in a place filled with history and tradition. While same-sex marriage isn’t legally recognized, you can still enjoy a symbolic ceremony dressed in traditional kimono attire and exchange vows in an atmospheric Japanese temple. Couples can expect full styling and wedding fittings, followed by a celebratory meal inspired by authentic Japanese wedding traditions. Japan’s rich culture and stunning scenery offer plenty to explore once the ceremony is over.
Greece
With its breathtaking sunsets, traditional Greek cuisine, and scenic hotels, Greece is a stunning location for a symbolic gay wedding. Though same-sex marriage is not yet legal, symbolic ceremonies—often held at your hotel—are a popular choice. We can arrange everything from professional wedding photos to a pre-wedding makeover and a romantic wedding meal. After the celebration, take time to explore the Greek islands. Mykonos is well-known for its gay-friendly energy and beaches, while Santorini is beloved for its boutique stays and postcard-worthy views. We recommend visiting multiple islands to experience their unique charm.
Aruba
While same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalized in Aruba, it remains an inviting destination for a symbolic beach wedding. Imagine exchanging vows at sunset on a serene Caribbean beach, surrounded by warm sea breezes and turquoise water. Spend your days relaxing at a luxury resort, snorkeling in clear waters, and savoring Caribbean cuisine. In the evening, enjoy a stroll along Aruba’s white-sand shores. For a little adventure, head to Arikok National Wildlife Park and dive into its natural pools.
Italy
Italy, one of the world’s most romantic destinations, allows civil partnerships but not full same-sex marriage. It’s still a top choice for symbolic gay weddings, with iconic backdrops in cities like Venice, Florence, and Rome. Say your vows along the quiet canals of Venice, ride a gondola through its cobblestone streets, and toast with a classic Italian aperitivo. In Florence, you’ll be surrounded by Renaissance architecture, perfect for a laid-back and stylish celebration. End your journey in Rome—the Eternal City—home to famous landmarks like the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain. Savor gelato, explore ancient ruins, and celebrate your love in true Italian style.

Mexico

In Mexico, laws vary by state, so we recommend checking with your travel concierge for more information. If you’d like to have a legal ceremony in Mexico, Puerto Vallarta is an ideal destination. Located on the coast, you can enjoy a sunset beach ceremony followed by a delicious celebratory meal.
Bora Bora

Bora Bora is one of French Polynesia’s most iconic islands—and for good reason. Known for its stunning overwater villas, vibrant lagoons, and pristine beaches, it’s the perfect setting for your same-sex wedding. The legal ceremony typically takes place at city hall, often officiated by the mayor, followed by a traditional Polynesian symbolic ceremony at sunset on the beach. To legally marry in Bora Bora, you’ll need to complete a marriage application and provide copies of your passports, certified birth certificates, and single-status affidavits.
South Africa

Same-sex marriage in South Africa was officially legalized in 2013. For couples planning a gay wedding in South Africa, you’ll need to have your birth certificates and a valid visitor’s permit. Divorce or death decrees may also be required. If you’re unsure, please give us a call or visit the official government website for more information.
Hawaii

There are eight islands in Hawaii where you can legally have a same-sex wedding, and the law is consistent across all of them. To have a legal gay wedding in Hawaii, you’ll need valid photo IDs (such as passports) and a completed marriage license application. If applicable, divorce or death decrees are also required. Please contact us for more details or assistance with the process.
New Zealand

For couples planning a gay or lesbian wedding in New Zealand, you must complete a Notice of Intended Marriage at least three days before the ceremony. Birth certificates may also be required. Whether you’re getting married in Auckland, Queenstown, or another location, be sure to check the current laws and requirements before you travel.
Argentina

For same-sex couples planning a gay wedding in Argentina, you’ll need to visit the civil registry office at least ten business days before your official ceremony date. Passports and blood tests from a local hospital are required. If applicable, divorce or death decrees may also be needed.
Brazil

If you’re planning a gay wedding in Brazil, you can have a fully legal ceremony. You’ll need to complete an application form and provide copies of your passports, original birth certificates, and declarations of civil and single status. Additionally, your intent to marry must be published in a local newspaper at least 15 days before the ceremony.
Iceland

In Iceland, you can have a fully legal same-sex wedding ceremony. You’ll need to provide your birth certificates, a valid passport, and a certificate of marital status (issued no more than eight weeks before the ceremony). An application form must also be submitted to the District Magistrate of Reykjavik, and two witnesses must sign the form to certify your ability to marry. If applicable, divorce or death decrees are also required.
Malta

Same-sex marriage is legal in Malta, and the country has ranked number one on ILGA-Europe’s Rainbow Index for eight consecutive years (through 2024), making it one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly destinations for your wedding. To marry legally in Malta, you’ll need to present two documents to the registrar: a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI), if available, and a statutory declaration.
The UK

To get married in the United Kingdom, you’ll need a few essential documents: a valid passport, birth certificate, and a certificate of marital status. This certificate confirms your legal freedom to marry and must be issued within a specific time frame before the wedding. If either partner has been previously married, you’ll also need to provide divorce decrees or death certificates, as applicable.
FAQs

Where are gay weddings legal in 2025?
Same-sex marriage is legal in over 35 countries worldwide, including the United States, Canada, most of Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Taiwan, South Africa, and more. Several countries also recognize overseas same-sex marriages even if they don’t perform them locally.
Can you help plan symbolic LGBTQ+ ceremonies?
Absolutely! We specialize in creating meaningful symbolic ceremonies, even in destinations where legal marriage may not be available. Many couples choose to handle the legal paperwork in their home country and then celebrate with a personalized ceremony in their dream destination. Some of the best destinations for symbolic LGBTQ+ ceremonies include Thailand and French Polynesia.
How far in advance should I plan a gay wedding abroad?
We recommend planning your destination wedding at least 12-18 months in advance. Popular LGBTQ+-friendly venues in destinations like Mykonos and Puerto Vallarta book up quickly. This timeline also allows international guests sufficient time to arrange travel and accommodations.
Do you offer gay wedding and honeymoon packages?
Yes! We offer customizable wedding and honeymoon packages designed specifically for LGBTQ+ couples. Our packages can be tailored to destinations worldwide, from private beach ceremonies in Thailand to elegant château celebrations in France. We specialize in creating seamless experiences that combine your perfect ceremony with an unforgettable honeymoon journey.
What’s included in your gay wedding packages?
Our wedding packages typically include venue selection, ceremony planning, LGBTQ+-friendly vendor coordination, accommodation arrangements, transportation, welcome events for guests, and honeymoon planning. We pride ourselves on working with vendors who have demonstrated their commitment to equality and celebrating all love stories. Each package is customized to your specific desires, budget, and guest count.
