Barcelona’s Gaixample, the stretch of Eixample around Consell de Cent, offers a similarly welcoming neighbourhood with strong community roots.

Beyond the two capitals, Sitges is one of Europe’s most celebrated gay resort towns, lively and unpretentious in equal measure. Ibiza has a long-established gay scene, particularly in the north of the island. Gran Canaria’s Maspalomas is a major destination in its own right, drawing large numbers of LGBTQ+ visitors year-round.

Legal protections are strong nationwide, though social attitudes vary. Major cities and coastal resort towns are cosmopolitan and relaxed. Rural areas, particularly in parts of Andalusia and the interior, can be more conservative. The far-right Vox party has made attempts to roll back protections in certain regions, though the national legal framework remains robust.

Luxury Travel in Spain

Spain is a good destination to visit all year round. If you are looking for hot weather then the best time to visit is between June and September. From the US, Madrid and Barcelona both receive direct flights from New York and Boston in around eight to nine hours and from Los Angeles and San Francisco in eleven to twelve. American, Delta, United, and Iberia cover the main routes, with Iberia generally offering the most direct connections onward to regional Spanish airports. Miami also has direct services worth considering for Andalusia-focused itineraries.

From the UK, Spain is two to three hours from London, with British Airways and Iberia operating frequent direct services to Madrid and Barcelona. Heathrow and Gatwick both serve the main Spanish cities, with Gatwick also covering regional airports, including Malaga, Palma, and Gran Canaria.

Once in Spain, the AVE high-speed rail network is the best way to move between cities. Madrid to Barcelona takes two and a half hours, Madrid to Seville the same, and Madrid to Valencia just under two. The preferred (‘Preferrente’) class offers wider seats, meals, and quieter carriages and is worth booking for longer journeys. Popular departure times sell out weeks ahead during peak season.
