Madrid Gay Pride 2017 is set to be one to remember
After the death of dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, being gay became legal in Spain just four years later. The LGBT community were finally no longer considered a “threat” to society (as Franco’s Vagrancy Act had claimed).
Now, since 2005, gay marriage has been legal in Spain, and in 2017 the 40th anniversary of their first Gay Pride Parade will be marked when Madrid hosts World Pride from 23rd June to 2nd July 2017.
There’s predicted to be over 2,000,000 people celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community pride. World Pride extends further than one giant street party, of course. Workshops, educational talks and conferences will be held, as well as cultural and family-orientated activities. Art, music and drama will be in abundance in a show of colour, vivacity and love. Every aspect of World Pride will serve to remind the watching world of the long history of inequality the LGBT community has faced. It ultimately celebrates being “alive, alive because we are different, because we are unique, free… happy”, as the official Madrid World Pride website states.
