The state of LGBTQ+ rights in Greece has reached a major milestone with the legalization of same-sex marriage in February 2024, marking a transformative step toward equality. This historic move makes Greece the first predominantly Orthodox Christian nation to embrace marriage equality, granting same-sex couples the legal right to marry and adopt children. It follows decades of progress, including the decriminalization of same-sex sexual activity in 1951 and the introduction of civil partnerships in 2015.
In addition to marriage equality, Greece has enacted significant protections for LGBTQ+ individuals. Anti-discrimination laws prohibit bias based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment and other areas. Transgender individuals have been able to legally change their gender without requiring surgery since 2017, further reflecting the country’s commitment to inclusivity.
While urban centers like Athens and Thessaloniki are hubs of LGBTQ+ culture and activism, challenges remain in more rural and conservative areas, where traditional attitudes persist. However, advocacy groups and activists continue to push for broader societal acceptance, ensuring the full implementation of these new rights.

Thessaloniki also celebrates its own Pride events, contributing to Greece’s growing culture of inclusion. Other destinations, such as Crete and Rhodes, are increasingly recognized for their welcoming environments.

Dining and Leisure Options
The beating heart of W Costa Navarino is the Beach Club. A place with unmistakably Greek DNA, where local and international DJs amp up the vibes that create a natural transition from casual beach life to high-intensity, late-night dance events. The bar serves signature cocktails crafted with local herbs and natural ingredients, while the restaurant offers Greek-inspired dishes prepared with regional produce that captures the epitome of Mediterranean cuisine. At sunset, the Beach Club transforms into a place for reflection—and anticipation of the night ahead—with pop-up happenings by the pier.
Watersports Center
Another highlight is the Navarino Sea Watersports center, offering a range of exciting aquatic activities. These include a diving experience during which participants can take an active part in sustainability research or initiatives to remove plastic waste from the sea. And there is plenty more fun to be had with snorkeling, stand-up paddle-boarding, kayaking, windsurfing, kitesurfing, tubing and banana boating. Watersports center will also host an all-natural restaurant serving freshly made dishes prepared with local and organically grown ingredients.
