With breathtaking Aegean vistas, beachside gay nightlife venues, and some of the world's most significant historical ruins, it should come as no surprise that Greece is an incredibly popular destination for gay travelers from across the globe. Greece's natural beauty combined with an increasing tolerance towards the LGBTQ+ community means the country offers the perfect gay travel experience. What’s more, a Greek adventure can easily be tailored to suit your precise travel desires.
For gay travelers craving a sun-soaked adventure jam-packed with unforgettable memories, you can’t do much better than Greece. In ancient times, Greece birthed Western civilization as we know it, and was the location of the world’s first democracy. The ancients were also open in their acceptance of male homosexuality, living a life that was in many ways, free of sexual binaries. Ancient Greece’s halcyon days were short-lived, and the country soon became an outpost of the Roman and Ottoman empires.
From the buzzing streets of Athens to the whitewashed nightclubs of Mykonos, Greece is littered with LGBTQ+ hotspots and welcomes a steady stream of gay travelers throughout the year. Regardless of whether you're the sort of gay traveler who loves to unwind or more of an active type, there’s something in Greece for everyone. With the perfect climate, beautiful ruins of antiquity, and five-star boutique hotels, Greece is a gay travel destination you won't want to miss.
Whilst Athens may boast the largest collection of gay-focused nightclubs in Greece, it’s Mykonos that enjoys the greatest reputation for unparalleled gay travel. The picturesque island of Mykonos has been a gay travel hotspot for decades, annually welcoming Xlsior Mykonos - one of the world’s best-known gay circuit parties. The beauty of Mykonos lies partly in its luxury accommodation offerings, which rank amongst Greece’s most sumptuous and benefit from coastal views and cliff-top positions. Besides the island’s exhilarating party scene, Mykonos is also a great destination to switch off and truly unwind.
At Out Of Office, we specialize in combining inclusive service with exclusive travel experiences, but you can find non-LGBTQ+ specific information on travel in Greece by visiting our Greece destination page.

Greece is one of our most popular destinations for gay travel and with world-class gay nightlife, stunning villas and gay beaches, it’s not hard to see why. Any gay trip to Greece must begin in Athens, where you’ll find the most reliable ferry transfers to the surrounding islands as well as the country’s densest concentration of gay bars and clubs. Athens is well worth exploring. You’ll want to see some of the great ruins, especially the Parthenon – the best-preserved buildings from classical Greece. Athens also has a blossoming artistic spirit, not least an excellent culinary scene.
A few days in Athens should suffice, after which we always recommend heading to the country’s archipelago of islands. You’ll catch the most reliable ferry transfers from Athens. Hundreds of charming Greek islands await you. The most famous islands are Mykonos and Santorini, and both are fantastic destinations for gay travellers. Mykonos is where you go to party, while Santorini is more of a romantic destination, complete with intimate cave suites and stunning infinity pools. Both can get busy in peak season, so consider visiting in the shoulder seasons to avoid the heaviest crowds. There are also less bustling Greek islands to explore, such as Naxos, Ios and Syros.
Greece attracts around 38 million tourists each year. If you go to Greece once you’ll want to go back every year. The Greek language is around 5000 years old.
Fans of History are in for a treat in Greece, as the country is home to a truly astonishing variety of well-preserved ancient monuments and insights into the country’s vast and influential cultural heritage. Ancient Greece was one of the first civilisations to embrace male homosexuality, and as you tour the country’s museums and galleries, keep an eye out for artefacts and artworks that illustrate this uniquely pre-modern practice. Athens is where you’ll find Greece’s most famous cultural institutions, including the National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum.
Situated atop the towering Mount Parnassus, the sanctuary of Delphi is another incredibly popular site of historical significance in Greece, and the purported home of the mythical Oracle of Delphi – a supposedly omniscient prophet whose predictions can either be read as the communicated words of the god Apollo, or simply the drug-fuelled ramblings of an isolated individual. However you choose to understand Delphi, a visit to this spectacular spot won’t be one you forget in a rush.
It’s not just testaments to the country’s ancient civilizations that make Greece such an enjoyable country to explore; Athens and Mykonos both boast world-class gay nightlife scenes. Whilst the nightlife venues in Athens offer a more authentic slice of Greek gay culture and community, those on Mykonos’ sun-soaked shores are very much tailored towards the hordes of globe-trotting gays who visit the island every year. It’s in Mykonos that you’ll find whitewashed beach bars overflowing with revellers.
The final feature of Greek culture that keeps visitors coming back is the light and refreshing flavours of the country’s national cuisine. Whilst each town and island has its own take on the Greek palette, wherever you travel you can expect nothing but fresh ingredients and back-to-basics culinary creations. From Souvlaki and Gyros to Mousaka and Spanakopita, Greece’s speciality delicacies offer a taste sensation that promises to delight any palette.
