For years, the Athens Riviera played second fiddle to the islands. That’s changing fast. The 70-kilometer stretch of coastline south of the Greek capital has quietly become one of Europe’s most compelling luxury destinations, anchored by the sleek enclave of Vouliagmeni and the glamorous suburb of Glyfada.

You start in Athens, where the key sites are concentrated and easily covered with the right planning. The Acropolis sits at the centre of it all, but the appeal of the city now goes beyond its history. This city has firmly claimed its place as a destination in its own right, drawing travelers year-round for its food, culture, nightlife, and shopping, and its hotel scene is finally keeping pace.

The Grande Bretagne and King George have long anchored Syntagma Square with old-world grandeur, but a new generation of boutique properties has transformed neighborhoods like Kolonaki, Monastiraki, and Psyrri into genuinely compelling places to stay.

Then you move to the coast. The Athens Riviera runs south towards Cape Sounion, where the focus shifts to space, sea views, and a slower pace. It is close enough to reach quickly, but far enough to feel separate.

Seven days. City first, coast second. A straightforward way to experience this part of Greece properly.

In detail

Days 1 to 3: Athens

You will stay in a centrally located five star hotel within easy reach of the Acropolis. Being based here keeps everything within a short drive or walk, which matters more in Athens than in most cities.

One day is set aside for a private guide. You will visit the Parthenon early, before the crowds build, and continue to the Acropolis Museum, which gives the site proper context.

The rest of your time is left open. Kolonaki is the best area for shopping and galleries. Koukaki has a more local feel and works well for long lunches. Evenings are simple. Good restaurants, well chosen tables, and no need to move around too much once you sit down.

Athens is also an easy city for LGBTQ+ travelers, with a relaxed atmosphere and a low key scene centred around Gazi.

Two full days here is enough to see the city properly without overfilling the schedule.

Days 1 to 3: Athens

Days 4 to 7: Athens Riviera

The move to the coast takes under an hour, but it changes the trip completely.

The Athens Riviera follows the shoreline south towards Cape Sounion. This is where you leave the city behind and settle into a more relaxed rhythm built around the sea.

Your hotel is chosen for position and privacy.

A private yacht charter is the most rewarding way to experience the coastline, opening up quieter swimming spots inaccessible from shore and offering a completely different perspective back towards the mainland. The better beach clubs are the more social alternative, and several along the Riviera are worth a full afternoon.

One evening is set aside for Cape Sounion. The Temple of Poseidon sits on a headland overlooking the sea. The setting does most of the work. A late afternoon arrival, staying through sunset, is all that is needed.

The rest of your time is left open. Lunch by the water, slow afternoons, and evenings that do not require planning in advance.

Four days here gives you enough time to switch off properly before returning home.
