Puerto Vallarta is Mexico’s gay capital, and unlike many LGBTQ+ beach destinations, this place doesn’t just tolerate gay travelers. It’s largely built around their needs and interests.
The beaches that matter are concentrated in and around Zona Romantica, the Gayborhood where LGBTQ+ hotels and bars await.
Playa Los Muertos
Playa Los Muertos is the gay beach of Puerto Vallarta and is one of the most famous beaches in Mexico and beyond. In fact, Playa Los Muertos has an international reputation as a party destination with cool beach clubs, turquoise waters, and attractive men.
The geography matters. The gay beach portion is the end of Los Muertos Beach. That’s where you’ll find the gay hotels and beach clubs. This isn’t scattered. It’s concentrated. You walk from your hotel directly onto sand where thousands of men of diverse ages are in swimwear, enjoying sun, sea, and the good life.
Blue Chairs has a great beach club and a popular rooftop bar with spectacular views of the beach below. The rooftop bar hosts parties and drag shows many times throughout the week. Blue Chairs is opposite the ever-popular Almar Hotel, Puerto Vallarta’s most stylish gay hotel. The Almar also has a rooftop bar, from which you can see the Blue Chairs rooftop bar and the gay beach down below. It’s a perfectly optimized gay travel experience.
Mantamar Beach Club is one of the most famous gay beach clubs in Puerto Vallarta, boasting a chic infinity pool, live DJs, and some of the best sunset views in town. This is the place to see and be seen, especially during peak season and events like Vallarta Pride. It’s an upscale poolside and beachfront lounging with bottle service available, with an attractive, upwardly mobile crowd.
Playa Olas Altas
Playa Olas Altas is celebrated as one of Puerto Vallarta’s most iconic beaches.This beach is right by Zona Romantica, the gay district. It has less party intensity than Los Muertos, which means if you want a visible gay scene without the relentless party energy, Olas Altas functions differently. It’s still thoroughly gay. It’s just slightly less loud about it.
Camarones Beach
Camarones Beach sits on the northern side of downtown Puerto Vallarta. It’s a must-see beach because it’s one of the most popular spots for LGBTQ+ folks to meet up. Plenty of inclusive events happen along the shore here. Camarones Beach is Blue Flag Certified. This matters. Blue Flag certification means environmental excellence, water quality, and security. You’re getting a beach that functions at high standards while remaining explicitly LGBTQ+-friendly.
Casa Cupula
If beach clubs feel too chaotic, The Pool Club at Casa Cupula is one of the best places to enjoy Puerto Vallarta’s gay scene in a more exclusive and intimate setting. This stunning rooftop pool club offers breathtaking jungle and ocean views, delicious cocktails, and one of the most famous clothing-optional pool parties in town. The Adam and Steve Pool Party happens on Fridays and is a men-only event with a fun, social vibe.
This is different from beach clubs. Casa Cupula’s elevation above the city creates privacy and exclusivity. The Friday clothing-optional pool party is legendary.

Vallarta Pride typically falls in May. New Year’s Eve transforms the entire Zona Romantica into continuous party. If you want visible gay culture at maximum intensity, these are the times. If you want to experience the infrastructure without the festival atmosphere, travel during regular seasons.
The Secret Escape: Majahuitas Beach
If you’d like to get away from the busier gay beaches of PV, take a boat to Majahuitas. It’s tucked between lush jungle cliffs and the shimmering Pacific, boat-access only and surrounded by nature.
Playa Majahuitas is often considered the best beach of Puerto Vallarta because it is time-consuming and difficult to access so at any given time there are less than 20 people on the beach, making it perfect for relaxing.
Majahuitas is located on the southern coastline of Banderas Bay, just south of Puerto Vallarta. It is situated between the towns of Quimixto and Yelapa, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and crystal-clear waters. The journey by boat takes around 30 to 45 minutes from Boca de Tomatlán, depending on sea conditions.
Majahuitas is not a gay beach. It’s not organized as gay infrastructure. But it’s where gay travelers should go when they need to disappear from the visible scene. The beach is very gay-friendly. Expect emerald water, almost nobody around, snorkeling directly from the sand, tropical jungle climbing the cliffs.
The only way to reach Majahuitas is by boat, either from the Playa Los Muertos pier in the Romantic Zone or from Boca de Tomatlán.
Understanding Puerto Vallarta
The city works because it’s genuinely organized around LGBTQ+ tourism. Zona Romantica isn’t a section of the city that happens to be gay. It’s the section that was deliberately built to be gay. Hotels position themselves explicitly. Bars advertise to you. Beach clubs exist to serve this market.
This means you can move through Puerto Vallarta without pretense. Same-sex couples hold hands on Los Muertos Beach without consequence. Nobody’s performing tolerance. The economy depends on you showing up as your full self and spending money.
The beaches work because they’re positioned within this infrastructure. Playa Los Muertos connects directly to gay hotels. Walking from your room to Blue Chairs or Mantamar takes minutes. The beach clubs serve people who want to be visible, who want to be part of community, who want the particular pleasure of moving through space surrounded by other gay men.
Most gay travelers come for Los Muertos and the clubs. They should. But understanding that Majahuitas exists, that Puerto Vallarta’s infrastructure extends beyond the party beaches to actual wilderness accessed by boat, provides something most LGBTQ+ resort destinations don’t offer: genuine escape within the same destination. You can party at Mantamar until sunrise, then disappear to Majahuitas the next day and float alone in emerald water with snorkeling that will make you forget about the scene entirely. That duality is what makes Puerto Vallarta special.
