Mérida rarely gets top billing next to Chichén Itzá, but its warmth, in both climate and welcome, makes it the right place to start. The tree-lined Paseo de Montejo and the evening crowds gathering beneath the Cathedral of San Ildefonso set an unhurried tone for the days ahead, and the city’s LGBTQ+ community, smaller than Mexico City‘s but well established, adds its own quiet presence to the local nightlife.
From Mérida, the trip turns to two of the Yucatán’s most significant Mayan sites. Chichén Itzá, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, draws millions of visitors each year for El Castillo, the Kukulkan Pyramid, and its equinox alignment, while the Great Ball Court and the Sacred Cenote round out a fuller picture of Mayan history than most day trips allow.
