The shift was significant. Thailand is now the only country in the region where you can travel as a same-sex couple, stay in any hotel without a question raised, and, if the moment calls for it, get legally married while you're there.

What makes Thailand work for group travel specifically is the variety the country packs into a single trip. Bangkok delivers the cultural and nightlife side: golden temples, riverside dinners, an LGBTQ+ scene concentrated around Silom that runs from cocktail bars to late-night clubs. Chiang Mai in the north offers a different rhythm entirely, with hill country, working elephant sanctuaries, and a slower pace that suits a few days mid-trip.
The southern islands, Phuket, Koh Samui, Phang Nga Bay, give you the beach finish, with overwater villas, dive sites, and resorts that have been quietly hosting same-sex couples for decades.

Each region has a distinct character, and the country’s compact geography means you can move between them without losing days to travel.
Bangkok is the starting point for almost every trip. The city operates on two scales at once: the grand temple complexes of Wat Pho, Wat Arun, and the Grand Palace on one hand, and the dense street-level rhythm of Chinatown, the floating markets, and the rooftop bars on the other.
The LGBTQ+ scene is concentrated around Silom, where Soi 4 and DJ Station form the spine of the nightlife, alongside long-running institutions like Telephone Pub, one of the oldest gay bars in Asia. Bangkok also has one of the best food scenes in the world, and most of our trips include a dinner at a Michelin-starred Thai restaurant or a private street-food walk through Chinatown with a local guide.
Chiang Mai shifts the pace. The northern city sits in the foothills of the Thai highlands and is the cultural heart of the country, with hundreds of temples, a celebrated craft tradition, and ethical elephant sanctuaries in the surrounding hills. Chiang Mai also has its own quieter LGBTQ+ scene, particularly around the old city.
The southern islands are where group trips usually finish. Phuket is the largest and most developed, with luxury resorts strung along its west coast (The Sarojin, Banyan Tree, Paresa, Keemala) and a long-established gay scene in Patong.
For something more secluded, Koh Samui offers Four Seasons and Six Senses properties on quieter beaches, while Phang Nga Bay’s limestone karsts and Six Senses Yao Noi are the standouts for couples wanting privacy. The food, the sea, and the resorts together make this part of the trip the natural finale.
Thailand rewards a proper itinerary, and that’s where independent trips often fall short. Most first-time visitors underestimate how much ground there is to cover. Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the southern islands sit in three different regions of the country, each with its own internal flights, transfers, and best time of year to visit. Booking the right combination, in the right order, with the right amount of time in each, is the difference between a great trip and a rushed one.
A group tour solves all of that. The other advantage is access. Independent travellers in Thailand tend to see the headline sights, which are extraordinary but also famously crowded. Our group trips open doors that are difficult to organise alone: private dawn visits to temples before the tour buses arrive, a guided street-food walk through Chinatown with a chef who knows which stalls are worth queuing for, ethical elephant sanctuary visits with the people who run the rehabilitation programs, longtail boat charters through Phang Nga Bay that skip the day-trippers, and dinners at restaurants that don’t take walk-in bookings.
Group travel also opens up the social side of the trip. You’re travelling alongside like-minded LGBTQ+ travellers, often a mix of couples and solo travellers, with shared meals, shared experiences, and the kind of camaraderie that builds naturally over a two-week itinerary. Thailand’s historic capital was founded in 1350. Up until the 18th-century, it was one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. Located above the Gulf of Siam, it was strategically located to avoid flooding and seaborne invasion. Ayutthaya was none the less razed to the ground by the invading Burmese in 1767. It has been an archaeological ruin ever since. Ayutthaya is a beautiful, numinous city and a testament to both human ingenuity and violence.
Chiang Mai is the second-largest city in Thailand. Take a trip to the night market by the river and experience some of Thailand’s best street food. Chiang Mai is close to Laos and Myanmar and the cuisine on offers reflects that. Unlike other hyper-gentrified big cities in Asia, Chiang Mai maintains old school eateries and shops, giving you a glimpse of a less westernized, older Asia.
The island of Krabi boasts some of Thailand’s finest beaches. It’s surrounded by hundreds of uninhabited islands. You can island hop from Krabi to Phuket. You can also go on a boat tour and see many more island of the Andaman Coast, including the uninhabited ones. The Andaman Coast is increasingly touristy but it’s also picture-postcard perfect.
