De L’Europe Amsterdam stands as a remarkable testament to Amsterdam’s layered history, built literally upon the foundations of a medieval fortress that once defended the city. Traveling all the way back in time to 1482, we find ourselves in a much smaller and more vulnerable Amsterdam where citizens built a wall with a fortress around it and named one of its main towers ‘Het Rondeel’, which stood exactly where De L’Europe Amsterdam stands today.
The current magnificent 19th-century red-brick building was constructed in 1895-1896 when the old structure was demolished and replaced with the 50-room Hotel de L’Europe, designed by architect Willem Hamer Jr., which officially opened its doors in 1896 and became an official monument (rijksmonument) in 2001.
The hotel’s unique character was forever changed in the 1950s when it caught the attention of Alfred ‘Freddy’ Heineken, who frequented the hotel and fell so deeply in love with the monumental building and sophisticated atmosphere that he eventually decided to buy it, making De L’Europe the first and only family-owned luxury hotel in Amsterdam. Today the hotel is proudly owned by the HEINEKEN company, creating an extraordinary connection between Dutch brewing heritage and luxury hospitality that permeates the property’s identity, most notably in the hotel’s celebrated Freddy’s Bar, named after Freddy Heineken himself, which serves as a charming gentleman’s pub where both guests and locals have come for years to socialize and connect.
