Batu Belig Beach: Bali’s De Facto Gay Beach
Located on the south of Bali between Canggu and Berewa, close to Seminyak, Batu Belig Beach stands as the island’s unofficial but widely recognized gay beach destination. This stretch of golden sand has been the center of Bali’s gay beach scene for years, though it operates more through community understanding than official designation.
Batu Belig Beach was once home to a small gay-popular café that had most of its infrastructure stripped down by local authorities in recent years. However, the gay community has adapted remarkably well. Tables, chairs, and sun loungers remain available, and food and drinks are still served in this area.
The gay-popular beach area sits conveniently close to the W Bali hotel and about 20 meters from the Grand Balisani Suites resort. The easiest way to reach the beach is via Jalan Batu Belig, making it highly accessible for visitors staying in the Seminyak area. This prime location means you can easily combine your beach day with Seminyak’s renowned gay nightlife scene on Jalan Camplung Tanduk.
While the beach operates without rainbow flags or obvious gay branding, the community atmosphere remains strong. You’ll find both local and international gay travelers mingling naturally with the mixed crowd that includes families and straight couples. The beach offers the typical Balinese beach experience: stunning sunsets, warm waters, and the relaxed tropical vibe that makes Bali special.
Look for the area near the W Bali hotel, where you’ll typically find a concentration of LGBTQ+ beachgoers, especially in the late afternoon as sunset approaches.
Double Six Beach (Pantai 66)
Located near the front of Hotel Kumala Pantai in Legian, Double Six Beach has experienced significant changes in recent years regarding its gay scene. This beach tells an interesting story of how beach communities can evolve and shift over time.
Double Six Beach area used to be a popular spot with gay sunbathers, particularly after the sun went down. There was once a small 7-meter strip of gay beach run by a friendly local named Putra, complete with rainbow flags and a dedicated gay section. The area was known for its welcoming atmosphere and became a regular gathering spot for both locals and tourists.
Today, the official ‘gay beach’ section and rainbow flag are gone, and the new occupants are described as straight. However, this doesn’t mean the beach is unwelcoming to gay travelers. Chairs and umbrellas are still available for rent, cold drinks are readily available, and the beach remains open to everyone. Some visitors report still finding rainbow-colored umbrellas and maintaining the friendly, inclusive atmosphere that made it popular.
Recent visitor reports paint a mixed picture. Some travelers note that the explicitly gay section has disappeared, while others mention finding welcoming staff and maintaining connections with the gay community. The beach is in a transition phase, where the gay scene is less visible but hasn’t completely vanished.
