A 12th-century castle in the bull’s-eye of Chianti, reimagined by COMO Hotels as a design-led retreat with one of Tuscany’s most considered wellness programs.

The estate covers 740 acres of vineyards, olive groves and woodland in Tavarnelle, 30 minutes from Florence and 40 minutes from Siena. COMO acquired it in 2018, commissioning Milanese designer Paola Navone to strip back centuries of accumulated decoration in 74 days, replacing heavy brocades and chestnut palettes with a spare two-tone scheme of cloud white and pietra serena grey.

The result exposes the building’s bones cleanly: groin-vaulted ceilings, whitewashed stone walls and the original frescoed heritage suites, which survived the edit intact.

The 50 rooms and suites sit alongside COMO Shambhala Retreat, the brand’s holistic wellness concept making its Italy debut here, and Michelin-starred La Torre, where executive chef Giovanni Luca di Pirro has been working the estate’s produce since 2012.

The estate also produces its own wine, olive oil and honey, and runs guided vineyard and truffle experiences across the wider grounds.

Accommodation

Estate Rooms and Suites

The majority of the 50 rooms and suites take Navone’s pared-back aesthetic throughout: whitewashed stone walls, oversized minimalist lighting, flecked textile headboards and free-standing marble roll-top baths.

Views look across the estate’s vineyards and olive groves to the rolling Chianti hills beyond. Spacious and calm, with the emphasis on proportion and quality of materials.

Heritage Suites

Three suites in which the original frescoed ceilings were preserved through the redesign, their blue, white and red painted details intact against the otherwise restrained palette. These are the most historically charged rooms on the property, combining the castle’s Torrigiani family legacy with Navone’s contemporary interventions.

The bathrooms are particularly well appointed, with marble roll-top baths suited to the scale of the spaces.

Podere San Filippo and Villa San Luigi

For families or groups, the estate also offers one to three-bedroom apartments at Podere San Filippo, one of the castle’s seven historic farmhouses, and the five-bedroom Villa San Luigi, a standalone property within the grounds. Both offer greater space and independence from the main castle while retaining full access to its restaurants, spa and estate activities.

Food and Drink

Two restaurants cover the full range. La Torre is the flagship, a Michelin-starred room in the castle’s 12th-century stables with groin-vaulted ceilings and executive chef Giovanni Luca di Pirro, who has been at the property since 2012. His farm-to-table tasting menu draws on the estate’s own herb gardens, beehives and wine cellar, with six courses that reference the landscape as much as the kitchen. The wine program is anchored by a 12th-century cellar holding 880 labels.

La Taverna handles the more casual end, with a menu of Tuscan classics in a relaxed setting. For warmer months, the Pavilion offers terrace dining with views across the estate, and doubles as the venue for truffle dishes, estate wine tastings and the kind of long Chianti lunches that are reason enough to stay an extra night.
