At a glance

The New York EDITION is a five-star design hotel in the landmark Metropolitan Life Clock Tower, across from Madison Square Park.

The New York EDITION occupies the 1909 Metropolitan Life Clock Tower, reworked by Ian Schrager into a quietly glamorous Manhattan hotel. The 271 rooms and suites are warm and residential, with oak floors and big windows framing the park, the Empire State Building, or the skyline.

Dining is led by The Clocktower, chef Jason Atherton’s Michelin-starred restaurant on the landmarked second floor, a set of paneled rooms with a billiards room and a gold-leaf bar. The Lobby Bar handles cocktails and light meals all day. There is a spa and a 24-hour fitness center, though no pool.

It is a polished, grown-up city hotel made for short breaks. It suits couples, gay or straight, who want design and a central base. Madison Square Park is across the street, with the Flatiron, NoMad, and the rest of Manhattan on foot or by subway.

Accommodation

Rooms

Light colours and white wood floors are offset by subtle flourishes, including faux-fur bed throws. The beds are supremely comfortable and the rainshower is so good you’ll never want to get out. All rooms come with excellent city views. You can choose from a number of room options, from Guest and Superior rooms to grand suites. Standard rooms are 274sqft/25sqm. Before turning in for the night you could take a stroll through Madison Park.

Further information

Dining

Dining is a strength. The Clocktower is the headline, chef Jason Atherton’s Michelin-starred restaurant on the building’s landmarked second floor, serving modern British cooking across three paneled dining rooms, with a billiards room and a bar finished in 24-karat gold leaf. The wine list reaches around 700 bottles. Down in the lobby, the Lobby Bar pours seasonal cocktails and light plates from morning to night, open to guests and New Yorkers alike.

Wellness

The spa is a small, calm one set high in the tower, with a short menu of massages and facials, and there is a 24-hour fitness center alongside. This is a city hotel rather than a resort, so there is no pool. What the EDITION trades on instead is the building itself, the quiet of the high floors, the residential rooms, and the rare luxury, in midtown Manhattan, of being able to close the curtains and hear nothing.

Location

The New York EDITION faces Madison Square Park, on the edge of NoMad and the Flatiron District, one of the most walkable parts of Manhattan. Eataly and the Flatiron Building are a block or two away, Chelsea and the High Line are a short walk west, and Midtown, Greenwich Village, and the rest of the city are minutes by subway from the 23rd Street stations nearby. All three airports are reachable in under an hour.

The destination

USA

Getting Around The US is best navigated by a combination of air and ground transport. Domestic flights are frequent and reasonably priced, making them the practical choice for covering long distances, particularly between the coasts.

The thing about the USA is that it's just so diverse. It doesn't matter what you're looking for, you can find it in the USA. I personally love San Francisco because it's hotels are arty and luxurious at the same time.

There's nowhere quite like New York for an ultra-lux city break. I always recommend visiting in December for the dream Christmas experience, complete with high-end shopping, Broadway shows and walks in Central Park.

Luxury New Mexico: Santa Fe, Los Alamos & Breaking Bad Locations

Tailor-made Vacation

New Mexico doesn't look like anywhere else in America, and it doesn't feel like it either. The light is different, the landscape is different, and the culture, shaped by centuries of Native American, Spanish colonial, and Anglo-American layering, sits apart from anything on the coasts. This itinerary runs three threads simultaneously.

Aspen in Winter: A Luxury Gay Ski Escape

Tailor-made Vacation

Aspen is one of those places that rewards arriving with no particular agenda. It's one of the top luxury travel destinations in the USA. The skiing across four mountains is as good as anywhere in North America, but the town itself pulls equally hard: the restaurants are exceptional, the hotels are world-class, and the cultural life punches well above what you would expect from a mountain resort of this size.
