The Jacobite Steam Train over Glenfinnan, in a Private Carriage

Ride the West Highland Line by steam from Fort William to Mallaig, with your own carriage for the famous crossing above Loch Shiel.

A Line Carved Through the Highlands

Glenfinnan Viaduct's concrete arches curving across the glen

The Jacobite runs along part of the West Highland Line, finished around 1900 to link the remote fishing harbor of Mallaig with the rest of Scotland’s railways, a daring piece of engineering through some of the country’s toughest terrain. Its star is the Glenfinnan Viaduct, a great curve of unreinforced concrete arches that was cutting-edge when it opened in 1901 and is now one of the most recognizable railway bridges on earth.

Steam gave way to diesel over the decades, and when steam services returned in the 1980s it was simply to boost local tourism. Nobody foresaw how famous the route would become once it appeared in the Harry Potter films, drawing families from around the world, yet it still works as an everyday Highland railway, heritage, practicality and storytelling unusually intact.

Why a Private Carriage

Family by the window in a private compartment on the steam train

The Jacobite is a public service, and at busy times, when families, film fans and photographers all pile into the same carriages, the magic can get lost in the crowd, especially for children. A private carriage changes everything: your seats are guaranteed, there’s room to move, children can hop between windows while adults settle into conversation, and moments that would be fleeting can stretch out.

Fort William to the Sea

Loch Shiel seen from the train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct

Leaving Fort William, the land opens slowly, pine woods giving way to broad valleys, the light forever changing as clouds race overhead, each window framing a new scene rather than one big reveal. You can’t mistake the approach to Glenfinnan: the train slows on the curve, the anticipation builds, and as you roll onto the arches Loch Shiel spreads out below. From your own compartment the crossing feels unhurried, with time to take in the scale of the viaduct and the water running toward the horizon.

After Glenfinnan the line crosses open moorland and follows the coast to Mallaig, fishing boats appearing offshore and the scent of salt replacing damp earth and coal smoke. Each stretch feels different, giving a sense of journey you rarely get by road.

History and Story for Every Age

Children watching the steam locomotive at Mallaig station

Children connect with the film link straight away, but the day offers much more, sparking questions about how railways were built, how steam engines work and how landscapes shape the way people travel, questions adults find themselves asking too.

The blend of fantasy and history makes it one of the few journeys that truly works for parents and children alike, and privately, the conversation can follow whatever your family loves, whether film scenes, Victorian engineering or Highland geography.

Your Out Of Office LGBTQ+ travel specialist can book the carriage and a welcoming Highland stay, and our United Kingdom guide covers LGBTQ+ rights and travel advice.
