The only hotel in the world positioned at the entrance to the Machu Picchu citadel, Sanctuary Lodge is a 31-room retreat set within grounds alive with orchids, hummingbirds, and Andean cloud forest, with Huayna Picchu rising above the canopy beyond. Ideal for travellers who want to experience Machu Picchu on their own terms.

Rooms and suites draw on warm earth tones, dark timber and local textiles, with marble bathrooms throughout and many opening onto private terraces above the mist-clad mountain landscape. At the guest-exclusive Tampu Restaurant and Tampu Bar, Peruvian and international cooking is built around produce from the surrounding Sacred Valley.

Adjacent to an orchid garden relaxation area with views of the valley, their spa draws on ancient Inca techniques, and the hotel’s guides can arrange private First Light tours of the citadel at dawn, Andean ceremonies with a local shaman, and coca leaf readings.

A stay here sits naturally within a wider journey through Peru: from the gastronomy of Lima and the sacred stillness of Lake Titicaca, through the quaint farmlands and traditional villages of the Sacred Valley, to the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu itself. For those looking to go further, Arequipa and the Uros Islands of Lake Titicaca can be explored aboard South America’s first luxury sleeper train, adding another dimension to one of the world’s great travel itineraries.

For couples and solo travellers who understand that trade-off and are travelling to Peru to spend real time inside one of the world’s most extraordinary places, this is the only address worth considering.

Accommodation

Rooms

Intimate by design, a natural consequence of a building that sits directly at the entrance to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where space is precious, and the setting does the work. King-size or twin beds are dressed in quality linens, with marble bathrooms with a shower, minibar, and free Wi-Fi throughout, finished in the warm earth tones and dark wood that run across the property.

Deluxe Rooms

A step up with panoramic mountain views through large windows, the Andean peaks filling the frame from bed. The same quality of finish runs throughout: king-size or twin beds, marble bathrooms, and minibar, with some rooms adding a private terrace for morning coffee as the mist lifts over the ruins.

One Bedroom Suite

Sanctuary Lodge’s most generous accommodation, with a separate living area, king-size bed, and a fully furnished private terrace looking out over the mountain landscape. The marble bathroom includes both a shower and a bath. These are rooms to return to rather than simply sleep in, with space enough to unwind after a full day on the citadel paths and a terrace that earns its keep as the light shifts through the afternoon.

More Information

? Don't forget that most of our itineraries can be totally customized. Our expert team will be able to talk you through all the options.

Dining

Tampu Restaurant opens exclusively to hotel guests for breakfast from 5:30 am, early enough to catch the citadel at first light before the day’s visitors arrive, through to dinner service until 9:30 pm, with 24-hour room service throughout.

Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the restaurant with light and frame views of the cloud forest beyond, while the kitchen works with Peruvian and international plates built around Sacred Valley produce.

Tampu Bar, lined in local stone and warm timber, serves from 7am and is the natural place to end a day in the mountains, with a Pisco Sour, a mug of native muña tea, or one of the barman’s classic cocktails. Pisco tastings can also be arranged.

Dining

Wellness

Sitting within the orchid garden at the rear of the property, the spa’s open-air treatment rooms are shielded by dense cloud forest with Huayna Picchu visible above. Massages and aromatherapy treatments draw on ancient Inca techniques, and the outdoor setting gives the experience a stillness that is hard to replicate elsewhere.

The hotel can also arrange a Coca Leaf Reading with a local practitioner, an ancestral Andean tradition that runs to around 25 minutes per person, and a Payment to the Earth ceremony, a ritual of gratitude to Pachamama led by a local shaman.

A dedicated relaxation area in the gardens is available for yoga and meditation, and the guided orchid garden tour, bookable at reception, offers a quieter look at the property’s plant and bird life, including the hummingbirds that move through the grounds throughout the day.

Wellness

Experience

The hotel’s position gives guests something no other property in Peru can: the citadel at dawn, before the public access queues begin. The First Light experience takes a maximum of four guests out at sunrise for a private guided tour of the ruins, returning to the hotel for breakfast with early morning views still fresh.

Guided hikes to Huayna Picchu and the surrounding sanctuary are available throughout the stay, and the concierge can arrange onward excursions to the thermal baths at Aguas Calientes, a 30-minute bus ride down the mountain.
