Two capitals, deliberately contrasted rather than conveniently combined: coastal Catalonia against the Castilian court, a week apart.

Barcelona and Madrid are frequently paired for convenience; both boast awe-inspiring architecture and a direct transport link of under three hours. This itinerary treats the Spanish pairing as a contrast rather than a checklist: Barcelona is coastal, Catalan, and shaped by Modernisme, while Madrid is landlocked, Castilian, and shaped by empire and the Habsburg court.

Barcelona centers on Antoni Gaudí’s work: the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and Casa Batlló, all in a full day. A day given to the Penedès wine region adds cava at its source and the Montserrat monastery in the hills above the city.

Evenings lean toward the Eixample, one of southern Europe’s most established LGBTQ+ neighborhoods, or the beach bars of Barceloneta.

Madrid offers a different rhythm. The Golden Triangle of art (the Prado, the Reina Sofía, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza) merits real time rather than a rushed morning, and the Royal Palace and Plaza Mayor anchor a city built for walking.

For those extending the trip, Chueca, Madrid’s LGBTQ+ center since the years following Spain’s transition to democracy, is a short walk away and worth an evening in its own right.

Days 1-3: Madrid

At the Mandarin Oriental Ritz, Madrid’s most storied hotel since César Ritz built it on the orders of Alfonso XIII, begin with the city’s Golden Triangle of art (the Prado, the Reina Sofía, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza), one of the most significant concentrations of European painting anywhere in the world.

A second day reaches into Castile itself: the walled town of Ávila and the Roman aqueduct at Segovia, both easy day trips from the capital.

A third takes in El Escorial, the resting place of Spanish royalty, and the Valle de los Caídos nearby, a more sobering counterpoint to the grandeur of the previous days.

Days 1-3: Madrid

Day 4: By rail to Barcelona

The AVE high-speed train covers the distance in under three hours, arriving into the heart of Barcelona in time for an afternoon exploring on foot.

Day 4: By rail to Barcelona

Days 5–7: Barcelona

At the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona on Passeig de Gràcia, spend a full day with Gaudí’s work: La Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and Casa Batlló, each built during the same few decades of civic ambition at the turn of the twentieth century.

A second day moves at a slower pace down Las Ramblas and along the beaches of Barceloneta, with an evening in the Eixample.

A final day given to the Penedès wine region and the Montserrat monastery in the mountains above the city closes the trip somewhere quieter than where it began.

Both cities carry real LGBTQ+ standing, not simply a general reputation for tolerance.

Madrid’s Chueca neighborhood has been the city’s LGBTQ+ center since the years immediately following Spain’s transition to democracy and remains one of the most established gay districts in southern Europe.

Barcelona’s Eixample district, sometimes referred to as the Gaixample, occupies a comparable role, concentrated around Carrer de Consell de Cent.

Travelers wanting to extend this itinerary toward the coast will find Sitges, forty minutes from Barcelona by train, a natural continuation, ending the week where this itinerary’s own coastal close leaves off.
