Seven days is a tight frame for a country this layered, and this itinerary uses it to move through Sri Lanka's ancient capitals, its tea country, and one of its best safari parks without skipping any of the three.
The trip opens in Colombo before heading inland to Anuradhapura, the island's first capital, where ruins stretching back to the 4th century BC sit alongside the Sri Maha Bodhi, the oldest historically documented tree in the world. Sigiriya and Kandy follow, each adding a different register, one architectural and one devotional, before the route climbs into the cooler air of Nuwara Eliya's tea country.

A jeep safari through Yala National Park closes out the trip's wildlife chapter, leopards, elephants, and crocodiles among a genuinely wide range of species, before the final day winds down the coast through Galle's Dutch fort on the way to the airport. Despite the pace required to cover this much ground in a week, each stop is given enough time to feel complete rather than rushed.
Seven days of near-daily movement asks a lot of a traveler, so the itinerary is sequenced to let the intensity ebb and flow rather than build in one direction.
The heat and stone of Anuradhapura and Sigiriya give way to Nuwara Eliya's cooler air and slower rhythm by the midpoint, before Yala's early safari mornings bring the pace back up again.
Galle's fort on the final day, sea air and worn ramparts underfoot, works as a deliberate wind-down before the long flight home, a last stretch of quiet after six days that covered nearly the full length of the island.

Sponsor a Child’s Education We believe in giving back to the community, which is why whenever you book a holiday to Sri Lanka, we sponsor a child’s education for 6 months. We work with a local charity to help provide the resources and funding to make a difference to a child’s life and give them a better start and a brighter future.
Day by day
This is a sample plan, not a fixed departure. Days can be added, removed or reordered, and almost every client changes something. Prices are an entry-level guide; your quote will be exact.
Day 1: Colombo
A driver meets you on arrival for the transfer into the city, and the afternoon covers a tour through Colombo’s older quarters: the Fort and Pettah districts, a working area of open-air bazaars and markets, and the tree-lined streets of Cinnamon Gardens.
Stops along the way take in the Hindu temple on Sea Street, lined with goldsmiths, the Dutch Church at Wolvendaal dating to 1749, Independence Hall and Independence Square, and Gangaramaya Temple.
Day 2: Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura served as Sri Lanka’s capital from the 4th century BC until the early 11th century AD, one of South Asia’s most stable and enduring centers of political power for over a thousand years, and its ruins are extensive enough to spend a full morning moving through them.
The Sri Maha Bodhi, the oldest historically documented tree in the world at over 2,300 years, marks the spot where the Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment, while the Samadhi Buddha statue, carved in the 4th century AD, remains one of the most recognized depictions of the Buddha in deep meditation anywhere in the country.
The afternoon continues to Polonnaruwa, another UNESCO World Heritage Site central to the island’s Buddhist history.
Day 3: Sigiriya
The climb up Sigiriya‘s rock fortress leads to the ruins of King Kassapa’s palace at the summit, with views extending across the surrounding jungle in every direction, a fitting reward for a site that has drawn visitors for centuries as one of Sri Lanka’s defining pieces of architecture.
The afternoon shifts register at a nearby batik workshop, where artisans demonstrate the waxing, dyeing, and boiling process behind the island’s traditional textiles, a slower, more hands-on counterpoint to the morning’s climb.
Day 4: Kandy
The road south to Kandy passes through Dambulla, where five cave temples, donated to Buddhist monks by King Walagambahu in the 1st century BC, hold more than 130 statues of the Buddha, deities, and kings across walls and ceilings covered in mural work.
A stop at a spice garden in Matale covers cinnamon, cardamom, and pepper cultivation, with the option of a home-cooked Sri Lankan lunch on-site.
In Kandy itself, the afternoon takes in a gem-cutting workshop and the Kandy Garrison Cemetery, a colonial-era burial ground maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, with the option of an evening cultural show featuring traditional Kandyan dance.
Day 5: Nuwara Eliya
The Temple of the Tooth, home to Sri Lanka’s most revered relic, opens the day before the drive continues to a working tea estate and factory en route to Nuwara Eliya, known locally as “Little England” for its colonial-era architecture and noticeably cooler climate.
Set against mountains, valleys, waterfalls, and tea plantations, the town’s country-cottage houses and Queen Anne-style mansions make the British influence unmistakable, and the evening air carries a genuine chill after the heat of the lowlands.
Day 6: Yala National Park
The afternoon’s 4×4 jeep safari through Yala National Park covers a landscape known for elephants, leopards, sloth bears, and crocodiles, alongside flamingos, spot-billed pelicans, spoonbills, cormorants, and a wide range of herons moving through open plains and scrubland.
Wild buffalo and elephant herds are a common sight here, and the park’s density of species makes even a single afternoon safari a genuinely rewarding one.
Day 7: Galle
An early start from Yala leads down the coast toward Galle, passing Sri Lanka’s stilt fishermen along the way, a traditional fishing method still practiced from wooden poles fixed just offshore.
The Galle Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site shaped in turn by Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule, closes out the trip before the drive to the airport for the overnight flight home.
