Northern Argentina feels very different from Buenos Aires, Mendoza or Patagonia. Up here, close to the Bolivian border, the landscape rises into high Andean desert, enormous salt flats and valleys striped with red, ochre and green rock. Indigenous traditions are more visible too, particularly across Jujuy and the Quebrada de Humahuaca.

Begin in Salta, one of Argentina’s best-preserved colonial cities, with arcaded buildings, elaborate churches and a strong regional food culture. From here, the road into the Calchaquí Valleys passes through extraordinary rock formations and some of Argentina’s highest vineyards, where Torrontés is the local specialty.

Continue north into Jujuy and the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape that has served as a major trade and cultural route through the Andes for thousands of years. Stay around Purmamarca beneath the Hill of Seven Colors, visit the market towns of Tilcara and Humahuaca and explore archaeological sites that predate the arrival of the Spanish.

The journey culminates at Salinas Grandes, a vast salt plain sitting high in the Andes, where the white ground seems to run straight into the mountains.

This is Argentina at its most unexpected, and one of the best additions to a longer journey through the country.

In detail

Days 1-3: Arrival in Salta

Begin in Salta, where the historic center is a mix of colonial façades, ornate churches and leafy plazas framed by the mountains of the Lerma Valley. Explore with a private guide, visit the city’s museums and take the cable car up Cerro San Bernardo for a first look at the landscape you will be traveling through.

From Salta, head into the Calchaquí Valleys. The road itself is part of the experience, passing through the red-rock formations of the Quebrada de las Conchas before reaching towns such as Cafayate and Cachi. This is one of Argentina’s most distinctive wine regions, best known for aromatic Torrontés. Stop at local bodegas for tastings and discover a side of Argentine wine country that feels very different from Mendoza.

Days 1-3: Arrival in Salta

Days 4-5: Jujuy, Purmamarca & the Quebrada de Humahuaca

Travel north into Jujuy, where the scenery becomes higher, drier and increasingly Andean. Stay in Purmamarca beneath the Hill of Seven Colors, then follow the Quebrada de Humahuaca through a succession of small towns, mountain valleys and archaeological sites.

With a private guide, visit Tilcara and Humahuaca, browse local markets and explore pre-Inca ruins along the route. This part of Argentina has a particularly strong Indigenous heritage, visible in its crafts, food, architecture and traditions. Rather than rushing through on a day trip, staying locally gives you time to see the valley once the tour buses have moved on.

Days 4-5: Jujuy, Purmamarca & the Quebrada de Humahuaca

Days 6-7: Salinas Grandes & the High Andes

Continue higher into the Andes along the Cuesta de Lipán, a spectacular mountain road that climbs towards Salinas Grandes.

The salt flats stretch across the high-altitude plateau in an immense expanse of white, interrupted by distant mountains and geometric pools cut into the salt. Spend time exploring with your private guide before descending through remote Andean settlements on the return journey.

Back in Salta, the final day is deliberately slower. Revisit the historic center, stop for a final regional meal or simply spend some time in the plazas before your private transfer to the airport.
