At a glance
Japan gives you something very few honeymoon destinations can: the trip can change completely every few days without ever feeling disjointed. One night you can be at an omakase counter high above Tokyo, two days later eating kaiseki in a ryokan and soaking in hot spring water in Kinosaki, then finishing in Kyoto with temple districts, gardens and some of the best small-scale dining in the country.
That variety is the appeal. You are not choosing between city, culture, food, design or downtime. You can have all of them in one honeymoon, and Japan’s rail network makes a multi-stop trip feel far easier than it would in most countries.

Kinosaki is what gives this particular route a unique appeal. After Tokyo, you leave the scale and noise behind for two nights in a traditional onsen town, where the days are built around bathing, dinner and walking between the bathhouses in yukata.
Kyoto is where you finish with the Japan people imagine before they go: temple gardens, lantern-lit Gion, Fushimi Inari early in the morning, long dinners and streets you actually want to wander without a plan. After Tokyo and Kinosaki, it gives the honeymoon a proper final act rather than simply another stop.
For LGBTQ+ couples, the practical details matter most around ryokans and bathing. We check those in advance, recommend properties where same-sex couples will be comfortable, and arrange private bathing where it makes sense.

Day by day
This is a sample plan, not a fixed departure. Days can be added, removed or reordered, and almost every client changes something. Prices are an entry-level guide; your quote will be exact.
Days 1-3: Tokyo
You arrive into Haneda and transfer directly to your hotel. For a honeymoon, we recommend Aman Tokyo: 84 rooms across six floors of a Marunouchi skyscraper, with interiors that interpret traditional Japanese spatial principles at a scale that takes some adjustment. The spa here is among the best urban wellness facilities in Asia.
Tokyo on a honeymoon is best approached as two or three neighborhoods rather than a checklist. Yanaka, the old merchant quarter that survived the 1923 earthquake, rewards an afternoon of slow walking.
The bars of Golden Gai in Shinjuku, each one holding perhaps eight people, are worth an evening. The Tsukiji outer market, still running after the central fish market relocated to Toyosu, is best experienced at breakfast with nowhere to be afterward.
For dinner, our specialists will secure reservations at the kaiseki or omakase restaurant that fits what you actually want to eat. Japan’s restaurant reservation system is one of the most complex in the world; this is not a detail to leave to chance.
Days 4-5: Kinosaki Onsen
The Kounotori Tajima Express from Osaka takes around two and a half hours to reach Kinosaki, a small onsen town on the Sea of Japan coast that looks almost exactly as it did a century ago. Willow trees lean over the central canal, seven public bathhouses operate on a circuit, and guests move between them in yukata robes and wooden geta sandals. It is, objectively, one of the most atmospheric places in Japan, and almost entirely absent from standard luxury itineraries.
We recommend Nishimuraya Honkan, the finest of Kinosaki’s traditional ryokans, with tatami rooms, in-room cypress baths, and the particular quiet that comes from a place built before anyone considered what it might sound like at scale.
Days 6-8: Kyoto
Leave Kinosaki Onsen behind and travel south to Kyoto, where you will spend the final three nights of your honeymoon.
For the hotel, we would usually look at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto or Six Senses Kyoto. Hotel The Mitsui sits beside Nijo Castle on the former Kyoto estate of the Mitsui family and has natural hot spring facilities, including reservable private onsen rooms and dedicated Onsen Suites. Six Senses puts you in Higashiyama, close to some of Kyoto’s most important temple districts.
Three nights gives you enough time to see Kyoto without cramming every temple into the same day. Visit Fushimi Inari early, before the main daytime crowds build, spend time in Arashiyama with a private guide, and arrange a private tea ceremony away from the larger tourist demonstrations.
Food should be part of the plan here too. For your final evening, we can arrange a kaiseki dinner at one of Kyoto’s established restaurants, where the menu changes with the season and each course is built around what is best at that time of year.

Why book with Out Of Office

Every honeymoon we plan is tailor-made. The hotels here are recommendations, not a fixed package, so if you want a different ryokan, more time in Kyoto or an extension to Hiroshima, Hakone or Kanazawa, we build the trip around you.
Japan rewards good planning. Popular restaurants can be difficult to book from overseas, ryokans often work around set dinner and bathing times, and multi-stop journeys are much easier when the trains, transfers and luggage are organized properly in advance.
That is where our specialists come in. We handle the reservations, transport and day-to-day logistics, while also knowing which hotels and ryokans work well for LGBTQ+ couples. If something needs changing while you are away, you have someone to call rather than having to untangle it yourself.
Travel dates make a real difference to price and availability, particularly during cherry blossom season. If you have fixed dates, it is worth planning early.
