Further afield, Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in January 2025, and trans visibility in Thai public life predates the legal change by decades. Cape Town combines South Africa’s strong legal protections with a visible trans community in the De Waterkant and Green Point areas.
