Trans Travel Safety Guide: Everything To Know Before You Book

Planning a trip as a trans traveler? Discover expert advice on passports, medication, destination safety, luxury travel and choosing welcoming countries.

Trans luxury travel is in a stronger place than it’s ever been. More countries with full legal protections, more hotels with trained staff and informed reservations teams, more destinations where the welcome is built in. The trips our trans clients book today aren’t compromise versions of someone else’s idea of a holiday. They’re the same villa, the same overwater bungalow, the same boutique hotel terrace anyone else might dream of, planned around what actually works on the ground.

This guide walks through how we approach trans luxury travel: the destinations we send our clients to most often, the practical considerations we work through behind the scenes, and the small details that turn a stressful trip into a seamless one. The short version is that you don’t need to figure most of this out yourself. That’s what we’re for.

Where We Send Our Trans Clients

Destination choice is the single biggest factor in how a trans trip feels on the ground, and a decade of running these bookings has given us a clear sense of where works best for trans travelers.

In Europe, Spain and Portugal lead the field. Both countries have strong legal frameworks, including self-determination gender recognition in Spain, and a hospitality industry that has been hosting LGBTQ+ travelers for decades. Sitges, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, and Porto all work beautifully. The Greek Islands are another favorite, with Mykonos in particular being a year-round LGBTQ+ destination where trans visibility is part of the fabric of the island. Iceland combines striking landscapes with one of the most progressive legal frameworks in the world. Italy isn’t always the first country mentioned in trans travel conversations, but the luxury hotel scene is well-versed in welcoming LGBTQ+ guests, particularly in Tuscany, Lake Como, and along the Amalfi Coast.

Further afield, Thailand became the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage in January 2025, and trans visibility in Thai public life predates the legal change by decades. Mexico’s Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City are both strong, with established LGBTQ+ scenes and a long track record of hosting US-based trans clients. Cape Town combines South Africa’s strong legal protections with a visible trans community in the De Waterkant and Green Point areas. The Maldives and French Polynesia work as private-island escapes where the resort itself sets the tone regardless of the national context, and we know the properties where the welcome is consistent.

If you’re drawn to a destination not on this list, that’s a conversation worth having. We’ll tell you honestly what we know about it, what we don’t, and what we’d want to research before booking.

Documentation, Security, and the Practical Side

Passport gender markers, name changes, security screening, and visa requirements are the part of trans travel that often gets oversold as a source of anxiety. In practice, most of it is straightforward once you know what to look for, and a lot of it we handle for you.

When you enquire, we’ll talk through the destinations you’re considering, flag any documentation matters worth being aware of, and brief the hotel and ground operators in advance where it adds value. If your passport name or gender marker doesn’t fully match your current presentation, that’s a conversation we can have privately and plan around. We’ve worked with clients across every combination of documentation and presentation, and very little is unfamiliar.

For airport security, the major hub airports in the destinations we sell into (Heathrow, JFK, LAX, Schiphol, Madrid, Bangkok) all have trained staff and clear protocols. The smoother experience usually comes from knowing what to expect rather than from anything that needs fixing in advance, and we can talk you through that side at the planning stage.

Hormones and Medication

Travel with prescription hormones and related medication is well-trodden ground for our clients, and there are a few simple principles that make it easier. Original packaging, prescriptions or a doctor’s letter for longer trips, carry-on rather than checked luggage. For trips longer than a month or routes through more restrictive countries, we’ll work through the specifics with you and our local partners.

If you’re concerned about access to healthcare at your destination, we’ll factor that into our hotel and location recommendations and identify the nearest clinics or pharmacies that can support trans patients. This is the kind of background work a generalist operator won’t think to do.

The Hotels We Book

A luxury trip lives or dies by the hotel, and trans clients deserve the same level of care any other guest gets. Every property we recommend has been vetted, most through direct client feedback, and we know which reservations teams brief well in advance, which villa categories suit couples wanting privacy, and which front desks treat every check-in as entirely unremarkable.

For trans clients in particular, we’ll often have a private conversation with the hotel’s GM or reservations manager before arrival. The level of detail in that briefing is entirely up to you. Some clients want us to mention nothing at all and prefer to be treated as any other guest, which works perfectly well at the hotels we book. Others appreciate knowing the hotel has been gently briefed so check-in is smooth. Both approaches are fine, and we’ll follow your lead.

Solo Trans Travel

Solo travel is one of the most rewarding kinds of trip, and we send a steady number of trans clients on solo itineraries each year. The planning is broadly the same as any other trip we run, with a few additional details: private airport transfers rather than open taxi ranks, hotels in well-located neighborhoods rather than isolated resorts, and ground operators we trust to look after solo clients well. Our group trips also work beautifully for trans travelers who want company on the road, and we’ll talk you through which departures are likely to be the best fit.

Why Work With Us

Luxury travel is meant to feel effortless. For trans clients, that means a planning process where the practical considerations are handled in the background while the conversation stays on the trip itself: the villas, the dining, the experiences, the moments worth remembering. We’ve spent ten years building the contacts, the partner network, and the destination knowledge that makes this kind of trip possible at the top end, and we’ve done it specifically for LGBTQ+ clients rather than as an afterthought.

Whether you’re planning a honeymoon, a milestone birthday, a quiet wellness escape, or a once-in-a-lifetime journey, our specialists can build the trip around how you actually want to travel. Get in touch and we’ll start the conversation.
