At a glance

The beauty of Killarney's lakes and the Beara Peninsula beyond them speaks for itself. Century-old grounds running to the water, ruins reachable only by kayak, and roads so remote you may not pass another car all day.

This trip begins on the shore of Lough Leane, where the water is calm enough most mornings for a private kayak crossing to Innisfallen Island, home to the ruins of a seventh-century monastery reachable no other way.

From there, the road runs along part of the Ring of Kerry before turning south onto the Beara Peninsula, one of Ireland's least developed stretches of coastline, where the Healy Pass climbs between the Caha Mountains and a private boat carries you out to the subtropical gardens of Garnish Island.

For those who want to go further still, a small cable car, the only one of its kind in Ireland, crosses to Dursey Island at the peninsula's western tip.

There is a particular kind of freedom in a landscape this quiet, an island with no one else on it, a road with nothing behind you and nothing ahead, where you are simply a couple out to see the coastline rather than anything else.

Two days at each end give the trip room to move at its own pace, without ever needing to rush from one view to the next. Organized entirely by our LGBTQ+ travel experts, this trip leaves you free to focus on nothing but the nature around you.

Day by day

?

This is a sample plan, not a fixed departure. Days can be added, removed or reordered, and almost every client changes something. Prices are an entry-level guide; your quote will be exact.

Day 1: Arrival at Killarney

Settle in on the edge of the national park, with grounds running down to the lake shore.

Spend the afternoon walking the woodland paths around Muckross House, where the ruins of a sixth-century abbey sit quietly among the trees.

Let the first evening unwind at its own pace, with the lake and the mountains beyond it a worthy focal point.

Day 2: Private Kayaking to Innisfallen

A private guide leads you by kayak across Lough Leane to Innisfallen Island, home to the ruins of a monastery founded in the seventh century and, by tradition, the site where the Annals of Innisfallen were written.

The island is reachable only by water, and a weekday morning crossing usually means having the ruins to yourselves, with nothing but birdsong and the sound of the lake for company.

Return for a slow afternoon and an easy evening back at your base.

Day 3: The Ring of Kerry

A private transfer takes you along part of the Ring of Kerry before turning south onto the Beara Peninsula, one of Ireland’s least developed stretches of coastline.

The road narrows as the peninsula opens out, mountains dropping straight into the Atlantic on either side.

Settle in for two nights, with dramatic views over the water and almost no other traffic on the roads.

Day 4: The Beara Peninsula

A full day exploring the peninsula at your own pace, over the Healy Pass for the views across to the Caha Mountains; out to Garnish Island’s subtropical gardens by private boat; or as far as the cable car crossing to Dursey Island, the only one of its kind in Ireland.

Each option asks for a different kind of morning, whether that is a slow drive, a boat, or a short crossing high above the water.

The coastline is the only real backdrop the evening needs.

Dublin is such a blast and home to Ireland's best gay scene. The pubs and clubs here are a cut above the rest and always promise a good night.
