A Private Tea Estate Visit in Sri Lanka’s Highlands

Follow the leaf from the hillside rows to the factory floor on a working estate near Nuwara Eliya, then taste Ceylon tea overlooking the hills.

How Ceylon Became Tea

Historic tea estate buildings in Sri Lanka's hill country

Sri Lanka’s tea story began in 1867, when the Scotsman James Taylor planted the island’s first tea estate at Loolecondera. After a fungal blight wiped out the coffee plantations in the 1870s, tea swept across the highlands, and within a few decades Ceylon, the island’s former name, had become a tea known around the world. On a private visit to a working estate near Nuwara Eliya, you follow the leaf from the bushes to the factory, then sit down to taste the result looking out over the hills.

Rows Across the Hills

Unbroken rows of tea climbing the slopes near Nuwara Eliya

Around Nuwara Eliya, where the air is cooler, tea blankets the slopes in unbroken rows. The factory stands among the plantation, waterfalls glinting in the landscape around it and wide views opening from several points across the estate. In the early morning and late afternoon, pickers work their way along the rows, gathering the bud and two leaves that make the finest grades.

From Leaf to Cup

Tea leaves spread to wither on racks in a highland factory

Inside, you trace the leaf’s journey. Freshly picked leaves are laid out to wither, warm air softening them before rolling; the rollers then press out the remaining moisture and expose the leaf to air, the friction starting to form the tea’s character. Spread out again, the leaves oxidize, developing color and aroma, with darker teas left longer than lighter ones. Firing and drying stop the process at just the right moment, and finally the leaves are sorted by size into grades before a taster judges the finished tea’s look, scent and color.

A Tasting With a View

Privately, you move through the factory at your own pace, with no group waiting for the next stop, and your tasting happens away from the shop, seated with a view over the hills rather than at a counter. Timing follows the light and the estate’s working day: come in the morning to see the pickers at work, or later as the light softens over the plantation.
